Tubular skylights: Velux vs. Solatube vs ?
Comments (3)We've got two Velux Sun-Tunnels both 14". We chose Velux because the style blended in well with the roofing since they were going on the front of our house. One's in a small powder room and the other a utility room. They have been great. We got the rigid tubing and had to use two extensions with each, but the lighting is still very very good. Occasionally we get a bug on the lens (at the ceiling area) but it's easy to access to get it out. We had a small leak in one at the first rainfall right after install due to contractor error but he fixed it immediately and we've had no problems since. We recently replaced our asphalt shingles with steel and the roofer was able to keep the sun tunnels in place....See MoreHow many skylights to make in this room, one or two?
Comments (27)I like the way they both look, but I choose two skylights. You already have large windows around your room. With two, you would be letting in light while pleasing the eye. That way it doesn’t look like you just added another large window on your ceiling. The two skylights would also look better from the exterior of your home. One skylight would look out of place and compete with the attention of the windows on the side of your house. Two skylights would be less noticeable on the exterior, while still letting in just as much light as one....See Morewhite laminate vs. clear skylight in kitchen
Comments (6)Must it be All windows removed? We have a velux skylight. It's fine..and we have some deciduous tree and pine needle drop but debris does not stay on the skylight. We do not have your pitched roof...so we easily go up once before winter and clean gutters....and I open the skylight and just dust off, I guess you'd say. The issue to me is why the kitchen can't retain some window sq footage. Light/view/opening feature for air/etc is a lot to forfeit. I would work on the plan..hopper or awning windows? or a couple narrow casements? This is work, to get this appropriate for your goals....but I would not remove a wall of windows....See MoreCost difference between skylights and shed dormers
Comments (26)If this is a true Craftsman, I would only do a dormer. That would be architecturally correct, and a better value in the end as far as being more visually appealing inside and out. Skylights are a pain to live with unless you plan for the electrical source to operate the blinds needed for light control. And the expensive blinds. Those are expenses that most don’t think about. It beats stuffing them full of anechoic foam to keep the horrible glare out. Which is what we resorted to in a rental. It was made worse by the owners insistence on mirrored closet doors. It was like a funhouse kaleidoscope of blinding glare from all directions. You couldn’t sleep one minute past dawn....See MoreCarole
