tubular skylights
Comments (15)Tubular Skylights are not all the same. Use common sense and do a little research on each manufacturer page and it will be very clear. The Solatube Brand has patents that make it the brightest and even deliver more HOURS of daylight. This is simply because the tubing is the most reflective (99.7%) AND the dome on the roof uses a fresnel lens (think lighthouses) to capture more light early and late in the day. If you want to change the white light (full spectrum daylight) to a warmer color, add theatrical film in any shade of ivory or auburn that you want. Yes - I work for a company that carries Solatube (in WA) and if they didn't do a terrific job with our gray skies, we wouldn't be celebrating twenty years. Less than 3% of our customers choose to change the color by the way. AND We HAVE GLASS ceiling lenses! TIP - A tubular skylight should ALWAYS be installed for less than what you would pay for a traditional box skylight. Use the 10" in smaller rooms and the 14" in larger rooms (kitchen/living). Don't place between you and the TV if you watch TV during the day (unless you add an electric dimmer). Same goes for a bedroom....See MoreSkylights : Velux vs Fakro vs others brands?
Comments (8)Not a selling point or not selling point, but Fakro makes a big deal of being 15% of the global market for skylights and roof windows on their website. They repeat it many times throughout. What they don't mention is that Velterm/Velux is over 60% of the same market....See MoreSkylight replacement Velux vs Wasco.
Comments (12)Hi all, I am hoping this thread is still active and monitored because I could really use some expert help. I had my roofer replace my roof including a 20-year old plastic skylight with the Velux fixed curb mount skylight (see photo below of the old skylight): The problem is that we live close to a highway and we can now hear the outside noise A LOT more than before even though the roofer said the new Velux skylight has the noise reduction feature. The roofer consulted a Velux rep and the rep told him that if he chose a deck mount, it would have reduced the amount of outside noise. The problem is that Velux apparently does not make the fixed deck mount skylights in size 45 1/8 x 45 1/8, but Wasco does. The other option was to do an "additional insulation job" on the already installed Velux curb mount skylight hoping it would dampen the outside noise. I have no idea what that means since I am no roofing expert. (see photo below for the NEW curb mount skylight) Here are my questions, please: What could be the reason why we now hear more noise than before? Would changing from a curb mount to a deck mount reduce the outside noise? Are Wasco skylights just as good with noise reduction as Velux? How would you best solve the problem of the outside noise (without eliminating the skylights :)? Thanks for any advice and recommendations you can provide!...See Morewhite laminate vs. clear skylight in kitchen
Comments (6)Must it be All windows removed? We have a velux skylight. It's fine..and we have some deciduous tree and pine needle drop but debris does not stay on the skylight. We do not have your pitched roof...so we easily go up once before winter and clean gutters....and I open the skylight and just dust off, I guess you'd say. The issue to me is why the kitchen can't retain some window sq footage. Light/view/opening feature for air/etc is a lot to forfeit. I would work on the plan..hopper or awning windows? or a couple narrow casements? This is work, to get this appropriate for your goals....but I would not remove a wall of windows....See Morefinallyrenovating
