Help with Warm colors for Bedroom
Comments (6)I have read that because my bedroom faces north I must paint it a "warm" color - because it really doesn't get much natural light unfortunately. That can be true. It depends on your expectations for that room and design goals. For example, if limited natural light and the quality of light from the north is an issue for you and your tolerance for color, then warmer colors might be a better way to fit the room with color and counter the dim, cool, bluish quality of north light. On the other hand, you can play into the directional quality of light. North light can be supportive of many different moods or atmospheres for a room, like serene, calm, spa-like, cozy, etc. Using cool colors in dimly lit rooms does not have to result in a room that feels depressing, or dark, or sad, or dead. The trick is to partner nuance of color with the inherent light qualities. If you can figure out how to do that, you can use any hue with any direction of light and meet just about any expectation and goal. What that means is that not every blue or blue-gray or green will work well in north light -- it needs to be the *right* blue or blue-gray or green. It's not a particularly easy thing to understand and it's a lot easier to show someone than try to type it in a condensed response but I felt it was important to chime in to say that being limited to a very specific temperature range of colors premised upon the direction a home's fenestration faces is ridiculous. There's an old color tip that pops up regularly about aligning a color wheel with compass directions. Like many other tips about color, it is probably an effort to simplify the process of choosing paint colors. What it does in one fell swoop is eliminate hues on the color wheel thereby cutting color choices by half or more. By default, it narrows the field of choice and makes it seem like a logical and straighforward way to pick a wall color. I am definitely of the opinion that there are certain qualities and characteristics of paint colors that are better suited to cardinal and intermediate directions of natural light. That's not the same as saying you must use warm colors in north light. The more brands of paint and color palettes available, the easier it is to find certain qualities and characteristics of paint colors in order to partner color with 3D environments. I work with several different brands of paints and would never, ever be without full spectrum color or at minimum an uber multi-pigmented process, like C2. With full spectrum color, I know that I can literally create unique and custom out of thin air and light beams. Aura and its unique multi-pigment colorants has potential. I haven't quite decided what I think about it as far as being a good brand to turn to when creating custom atmospheres....See MoreMaster Bedroom plans - what color is this?
Comments (3)Also, you could email PB "design services" to ask the question regarding wall color in the photo. PB teams with Sherwin Williams now and their collection of paints is on the website. They used to team with Benjamin Moore but they split sometime last year I think? So you could look at the Sherwin Williams link to see if you can spot the color. Or take the photo in with you to a Sherwin Williams store?...See MoreShared Boys Bedroom
Comments (15)We all know it won't stay like this...this is just for the portfolio, and it's as it should be for that. I did not know the room was not intended to stay like that, that it was just for a portfolio. I took it seriously as being for a couple of real kids; thus my questions. I was pleased to see a room for kids that is not too cutesy. My siblings and I did not grow up with kiddie-looking rooms, and I've always thought other kids-- boys and girls-- can appreciate handsome furniture, decent artwork, a well lit room, well arranged furniture, well made bed covers, etc. If I, in my lower middle class upbringing learned to appreciate an attractive living space, then so could other kids. So, yes, I thought this was an actual presentation of two boys' bedroom....But a room does need to be fully functional and not a burden for its occupants....See MoreWarm blue paint color for this bedroom?
Comments (59)Really depends on you, I think. You were underwhelmed by the beige so I think wall colour “affects” you. I’m that way. I can stand a lot of fugly in my rooms as long as the wall colour feels good. Which is why I’m always committing the decorating faux pas of walls first, bedding and curtains later. :p Some people love dark colours in their home and others want light ones, etc. Some people don’t seem to notice (wall) colour after a while. This couldn’t be more subjective, imho....See MoreOTM Designs & Remodeling Inc.
