Jeri, Since I only used Paint to adjust the given drawing, not a drafting software that I'm used to, or even graph paper, I can't provide exact dimensions of the island or aisles as drawn, just close guesses and an explanation of my goals. I tried to make the cooking aisle 42" (but would actually prefer 36" if it were my kitchen). I tried to make the cleanup aisle at 48" to give room for open dishwashers and traffic...to discourage traffic in the work area. Using the 13-5 1/2" measurement in the drawing that begins at the front of the fridge, this would leave the island at just about 45 - 48" wide. It looks to be about 10 ft long, but it could be adjusted, as I just stretched it to where it seemed to fit. The idea here is to have different zones, which are especially helpful in a busy, multi-worker kitchen, which Marmoreus' will be in the near future. In my similar kitchen someone else might be working cleanup while I cook and while someone bakes, and we all need our separate spaces. This is not necessarily the perfect 'efficiency kitchen' for 1 cook, but I don't know how to have perfection, and there always have to be compromises. When I do work alone, I don't find it a problem to collect things to the side of my prep or bake area on the island, then move them to the cleanup sinks and get them out of my way.

I really appreciate the help! We definitely want to go with the Advantium because we have a 3 year old and from what I've read about it, I think it is something that we'll use frequently for fast weeknight dinners.... That being said, I know that the directions say not to install it under counter but people have indicated that it can be done. I can't figure out a better place for it. It's an eat in kitchen so that's what the rest of the space is for - I wouldn't want to make it non eat in because I think that if we want to sell later, that would hurt us in our area. Also, we're planning to go with the 36" Capital range so I know we'll need pretty heavy duty ventilation and would like to have a wood hood so I wouldn't want to install it over the range... I have to agree RE: the size of the island and it blocking the space between the range and fridge. But my 3 year old loves to be in the kitchen with me. We have one of those learning town step stools and I'd like to be able to put him somewhere away from the range and not blocking things so the island will definitely serve that purpose. I was thinking about storing my dishes to the to the right of the range and my glasses over by the fridge. But I think the idea of switching the dishwasher to the other side and storing my dishes on that side is a good one! I appreciate the suggestions!

I think the garage is too small (at least the double part - there are no dimensions on the single). Our garage is 22' x 22', and it is cramped for DH's minivan and my Jeep. If you expect to have any storage at all in the garage (or a lawn mower), 24' wide would be a lot better. The double garage on your drawing doesn't appear to be rectangular - perhaps the wall shared with the house is that long, and you can just move the 3rd stall to the left. I don't care for the access to the closet - I change clothes when I get home from work, and I would hate to have to weave my way through the bathroom to grab a sweatshirt. I would cut the entry closet out of "her" closet, put the bedroom door on the fireplace/foyer wall, and access the master closet from the bedroom. Maybe "his" can be a reach-in, facing west, and "hers" can have clothes hanging on both sides. Again, hard to tell without dimensions, but it looks like there's room. Hanging clothes in the corner of an L doesn't work very well anyway, so I think you'd come out about even for storage space.

Thanks everyone for your comment and sorry for the delayed response (busy couple of days). I did a little research on the corner stove. It looks a bit involved, so I'm going to see if I can make this current floor plan work, with some changes. (I did find an good article, which I'll include at this end of this post). Thanks everyone for encouraging me to have more space between stove and counter. I have some good news--hopefully. We are bumping out the kitchen to enclose a weird jog (and shifting the kitchen over to create the powder room etc). My architect didn't label all the dimensions and suggested I just pull the tape. I think I may have 6" more than I'd planning on. (possibly 8" more, if they use 2x4 walls, but I'm banking on 2x6 exterior walls). If this is true (fingers crossed) it means I could a) make counter on both sides of the sink 30", so the upper cabs would match OR b) make the counter between the sink and stove 36 (!) inches. Yay! This feels like a no-brainer. Also, I think the upper cabinets will look fine. I have an older home with wide trim (so I need to allow space for that). So, if my math is right, the upper to the left of the sink would be 18", and the upper to the right of the sink would be 30". (from window to cabinets, I'd have 4" of trim + 2" of breathing room). Next to that upper left cabinet, is the stove's 30" hood, topped with a short 30" cabinet. So there would be some consistency and...the difference between the 18" on the left and 30" on the right is big enough that it will look intentional, not like a near-miss. What do you think??? I also called my cabinet guy. I'm going to meet with him again (this week?) to get his input and design/usability suggestions. This week I only talked to the office guy (Not the head cabinet maker) but he said what you all said, that pull out drawers are more efficient and they cost about the same. So...I am moving in the right direction. Thanks everyone for your help. If you have others thoughts I'd love to hear them. p.s. Buehl the kitchen is a complete renovation so in theory everything is flexible. The window location is definitely dependent on the cabinet layout and will be finalized last. IMO I think the basic design makes sense: L-shaped with appliances at the end. With the DW at the nook end of the sink-wall counter, we put the sink next to that. I like the window over the sink for when I do dishes. Talk with your kitchen designer, contractor and cabinet designers about placing a corner range. Unless you are incredibly talented with DIY projects, a corner range can bring on some headaches. Some issues you’ll need to consider: • Venting and how the vent hood will fit into the corner • Extra fillers next to the cabinets — doors and drawers will need to clear the oven when open. • Look carefully at handles when you are choosing a range for a corner and realize that the oven’s handle may stick out beyond your cabinet fronts. • Make sure you have proper clearance for the oven door when it is open — you cannot have it bonking into an island when it’s only partially open. Also, think about trying to hoist a heavy dish out of it and then see if you have enough room to do so in front of the open door, or if you can manage grabbing things from the sides. • The corner range layout works best with counters on either side. In this open-space plan, everything is oriented toward the corner — in particular, the view from the bar. Placing the range and vent hood in this corner creates a focal point where the backsplash extends all the way up to the ceiling.
