Window Treatments for large windows

Hello, our house has a fairly interesting architectural design as the builder went a little crazy with the windows (please see pics). We have large windows on both the east and west side of the house covering the living room and family room respectively. What this means is that every morning and every afternoon, the sunlight from these windows is pretty unbearable and will eventually start to make the furniture fade. In addition, because it is Florida, it becomes very hot in the house, despite the 27 foot high ceilings, making our A/C work on overdrive. I believe both sets of windows were tinted a decade or so ago, but we still have issues sitting in the family room during mid-morning and mid-afternoon sun.

That said, it is gorgeous at times when you can see the sky during the day, and moonlight at night. So I wouldn't want to replace or remove it.

Our question for the houzz experts is what kind of window treatments would you advise for these odd-shaped windows? Shades, film, etc? And if so, do you have any specific types to consider?

I am not quite sure how big the skylight window is but I would use a motorized skylight shade.

There are a ton of companies that make the motorized shade so you can pick any material. I would use a cellular shade that was blackout in the skylight. With motorization, you can open and close the treatment as you need.

For the window wall, I would also look at motorized shades. The question would be an aesthetic question - Do you want the shades to be on individual windows or do you want one long treatment on each vertical window grouping. Individual motorized shades would probably be nice because you could operate each window separately. Most of the motorization controls are built my Somfy. For the type of window treatment, cellular shades offer some thermal insulation, double cell is better than single cell. I am not sure if you want black out shades for these windows.

One other options is to put the window treatments on the outside of the windows if your exterior permits. Take a look at Bandalux for some ideas.

I have a window that is about 114 inches wide (made up of 3 windows like yours), maybe about 54 inches long as well. I currently have wood blinds, outside mount, and I do NOT like them. I am going to replace them with curtains . . .I just need to sew them! Here is why I don't like them: (1) You will be getting 3 different blinds, one for each window. There is no guarantee that the blinds will match up perfectly. I called the co. to complain, and they said it can be off within a certain distance per their standards, and if it exceeds that, the would replace them . . .but it was within that range, so no. (2) Open, the outside mount doesn't look so bad. Closed, yuck! I think it looks messy. (3) On a large window, it's a whole lotta blinds going on. Very, very angular, a lot of lines. If you were going with an inside mount, at least you could put curtains up to soften the edges, but with an outside mount-- not so much. On mine, the blinds are connected to something that looks like moulding, so I guess you could put up a rod that projects past that for a valance, but like I said, with an outside mount, panels would be harder. Just my 2 cents. I know some people who visit LOVE my blinds, so who knows. When I got them measured, I had it done professionally. People will come and give you free estimates and do measurements then.

Fabric Roman shades would be great. I found the best prices at blindsgalore - we just got new shades from them in December for our bedroom and were very pleased. Blindsgalore.com I just got on the website and priced 74" wide x 42" long (just a guess); with their current 33% sale going on, that size priced out at ~ $175. Lots of colors/patterns/plain.

apple_pie_order, not really. I never raise them, but do open them to get some light. Yes, they are heavy, but not balsa wood, plastic, so that probably makes matters worse. If I do go with wood blinds, I would change that out for whatever goes on the other two windows. I had just put in pjs Tati on shutters at our old house before we moved and loved them. I just don’t think they’d work on the big windows, with the ‘seam’ where they meet would be the middle of a pane. Maybe wood blinds with some nice fabric panels on the side?
