Anyone have Vanilla vine cuttings available on Oahu?
Comments (13)I got a cutting from Lyon Arboretum. I also bought one at a farmer's market at the shopping center where Costco Hawaii Kai is. Since you live on the west side, the Oahu Urban Garden Center is your best bet. See randag's post. The Oahu Urban Garden Center is adjacent to Home Depot Pearl City. My vanilla vine has produced 3 crops so far. 1st year it blossomed, only 3 attempts at pollination took, and the ants got the beans before I could. Second year, I finally figured out how to pollinate, and got a maybe 3 dozen beans. Third year (2011), smaller crop because I didn't fertilize, so after 2011 harvest, I will be fertilizing. Note that it took several years before it bloomed, but I admit to neglecting it....See MorePicked Up My Vanilla Stawberry Hydrangea Today
Comments (9)Thank you so much ... if you did indeed, wished me luck! I'm still *tickled pink* ... literally ... I came home with both!!! Â;) I've only prep'd for one last Fall, but couldn't pass up "Tickled Pink" as they only unloaded 3 of them & 4 VS (both just #2 pots but fully leafed out)! I have just enlarged my 'Sunny Long Island' bed last Fall by 2' all around ... I may just dig up some perennials & stick TP in there!!! I'll take my time, perhaps move her to a larger pot for now! Prime real estate is running low w/o digging up old favs! Â;( Thanks again!...See MoreWhich vanilla
Comments (26)I'm a big fan of Nielsen-Massey's Vanilla Bean Paste. And use it for most of my baking. I've also tried Nielsen-Massey's powdered vanilla. And while their powdered vanilla is good for some things, like buttercream (because it's void of 'color,' so it keeps buttercream fairly white. [Something cake decorators prefer, as it is easier to tint]), the powdered vanilla lacks character and it's just plain weak. The vanilla paste however, is dark and delicious, packed with vanilla bean seeds throughout. I use it in desserts where I don't mind the seeds taking the spotlight. Unfortunately, it's the only reason I won't add it to buttercream used for decorating. I also make my own vanilla extract, with plump, Tahitian vanilla beans, which I steep for several months before using. Very fragrant and flavorful. Sol...See MoreWhere do u buy your Vanilla Beans??
Comments (6)Penzey's here too, just like my cinnamon. It's easily accessible for me and I just stock up on things when I make a trip to the "big city". I had some gifted to me by Ilana that was made with rum, but didn't always want the rum flavor. I think it's more versatile made with vodka, as that seems to have less flavor of its own. 1 cup vodka 6 vanilla beans Split the beans lengthwise, place into bottle or container, add vodka. Make sure beans are covered. Shake a couple of times a week, it'll be ready in about 3 months. Fewer beans, longer time to sit. You can use the beans a second time, but you need less vodka. Truthfully, the vanilla I liked best was a gift from Carol/Readinglady and contained no alcohol at all. Of course, I don't remember the name, but the stuff smelled so good you could dab it behind your ears and wear it as perfume! Had a brown label..... Annie...See More- 9 years ago
