Can anyone ID my cactus?

My friend gave this cactus to me as a gift, and I have no idea what type it is. I'm new to owning plants, so I was wondering if anyone on here could help me ID it. Also, do I need to trim the thin parts at the top?

Im guessing a very very very etiolated Trixanthocereus;).

I would start by getting it out of that cup. Get a pot with drainage holes(terra cotta preferably), cactus mix, and perlite or pumice. The new pot should be about one inch wider than the cup. A mix of 60% pumice or perlite with 40% cactus mix. When repotting get all the old mix off the roots. Don't water for a week after repotting.

Now when it comes to the etiolated growth it would probably be best to cut those pieces off. Once you give more light the old skinny growth won't be able to support the new sturdier growth. Just take a clean knife and slice off the lanky growth. I would do this after you've repotted:).

I believe that is Mammillaria elongata. It would be best if you posted a pic of your plant, though, so we could tell for sure. =)

Looks like a baby Cliestocactus maybe Cliestocactus strausii 'Silver Torch'. Pretty small to get an id because lots of baby columnar cactus look like that. I've even seen baby Pilocereus that look like that. I don't think yours is a Pilocereus thought;). It's going to be years before it blooms. So just give it fast draining mix amended with perlite and or pumice. Get a pot with drainage holes which has already been suggested;). Along with some sun. Goodluck;).

Stefan thanks for the links, interesting and the flowers are lovely. It says to look after them, they need lots of sun, moisture and fresh air. Well up north where my son lives it would get lots and lots of sun and fresh air but not much moisture, sometimes basically nothing in the summer. So thats probably why it's so messy. I like the monstrosa form better, if I could ever like a cactus lol. Kara yes many of the Opuntia are wreaking havoc in pasture, grazing lands and in National Parks too. Sheep, kangaroos you name it are dying slowly from the spines. So I'm going to check the species name against the "Reportable weeds" list, then ring whoever deals with them. Thanks guy's

No I really don’t think it’s an Echinopsis. Doesn’t have that Echinopsis look. When I look at Echinopsis tegeleriana that looks like an Echinopsis. Actually looks more like a Lobivia, but Lobivia are a part of the Echinopsis genus. I can’t really explain why your little guy doesn’t look like an Echinopsis, but does looks like a baby Ferocactus. I could be wrong tho🙂. Are some of the newest spines pink? Definitely don’t compare a mature form Ferocactus to baby Ferocactus because they can look super different.
