DH calls CNN DOT: dump on trump

Fox is that way also though it is pro-Trump. Many news websites talk about nothing but Trump. I pick and choose a few news websites to read and have given up on network news entirely. Maybe they will get the hint if enough people tune out?

I stopped watching any news shows except NBR. My side bars on Yahoo, every time I log on, shows me enough of what's out there to see what I'm missing.

Nasty, vicious....yah....NOT news.

What I don't like about CNN is that they beat topics to death, not just dt but whatever is current. When that plane disappeared in the Indian Ocean a few years ago, it was covered endlessly. It's amazing that they can find so much to say when there is actually no "new" news. I turn it on occasionally, but not as much.

And the long, tedious drug ads, no thanks, I don't want to ask my doctor about a drug that might cause me to have thoughts of suicide, cancer, heart attack, seizures, etc.

I don't have cable, but I can tell you those ridiculous drug ads run on the original networks too. The ads are banned in most countries, but the U.S., apparently with the profit motive always in mind, continues to permit them. I guess enough people are swayed by the ads and do ask their doctor for these drugs; otherwise I presume the drug companies would stop paying a fortune for air time.

You mean the 15 seconds of a news story before they bring in their panel to discuss? for hours? Spare me.

I was very impressed by CNN when it first came out, sometime in the 80's was it? How timely it all was, and how informed I felt watching it! Lynn Russell was the main anchor. But even before last year's election coverage and everyone's Trump fixation, it had gone way downhill, as has most news shows & channels. I'm sick to death of the way even the evening news tries to end each segment with a cliff-hanger: "wait til you see this." And "breaking news"? ha, I remember when that meant something NEW and IMPORTANT was going on RIGHT THIS MINUTE.

PBS Newshour is generally better.

When it comes to breaking news, IMO, ABC is the worst. Not only is every sound bite breaking news but even the way the reports talk is irritating to me, in every single one of their shows, the emphasis on wording and tone is so overly dramatic it's hard to listen to.

MSNBC is right up there with CNN, I can't stand Frump and want to stay current on what's taking place, but I can't stand to listen to shows like RacheI Maddow even more.

I read most of my news but record the Evening News with Lester Holt. DVR makes watching any network tv doable. I cannot stand those drug commercials and would skip tv all together if I couldn't fast forward through them.

I would be interested to know where you folks read your news on the internet and what sites you like best and why ?

A diner that a co-worker and I often go to for lunch usually has one or another of the cable news channels on. Sometime last year when we were there, the entire time we were there the channel was flashing a breaking news alert that Joe Biden had announced for the umpteenth time that he was really, really, definitely not running for president, and the talking heads were talking on and on about what this new development meant.

Now when we go there, if we sit in the back room rather than at the counter, I reach up and turn off the TV. I'm sick to death of seeing he-who-must-not-be-named or hearing the latest idiotic utterance he has blurted forth. The only news I want to see about him is that he has finally been indicted, impeached and imprisoned.

I just happened to see this in the paper today.

This belongs on Hot Topics. I watch CNN and MSNBC because someone has to report what the sociopath in the White House is doing now. Fox is GOP state-run pablum feeding coverage. For instance, when the health bill was going down in flames and every network, cable,and otherwise was reporting it, Fox was lamenting the Obama's trip to Indonesia??? Like why? That was their lead story . They suck up to T and he makes only appearances to Fox and friends. Fox and their blonde bimbos in their tight dresses fawn all over him which is what his fragile ego needs all the time.

CNN covers more than Trump. I try to watch Jake Tapper as often as possible. Occasionally watch Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, but don't really care for the network.

Elizabeth, I like The Washington Post, NY Times, NPR, and occasionally Wall Street Journal.

The only news I watch on TV is the local news. I have quit watching the late night talk shows due to all the Trump bashing. I didn't vote for him but if he ran again, I would. Sick to death of all the crap that passes for news.

We read the Chicago Tribune in print or online. I like the BBC-America site. I listen to NPR.

Please don't get 'deaf' to dt; that's part of Bannon's plan to destroy our nation. Blah, blah, blah, outrageous tweet, blah, rescind protective rules, blah, tweet, insult other nations, blah, tax breaks to the wealthy, blah, tweet...

This is an old complaint about CNN. There isn't enough news to fill 24 hours every day, so its programs do other things too that some like and some don't. Yes, and repeat stories and programs over and over. Yes, they tend to find a few issues du jour and pound them into the ground. Anyone with a better idea about what they should be doing should let them know.

Through its own correspondents and affiliations with domestic and foreign TV media, CNN seems to be better equipped to respond quickly to events no matter where. Local news broadcasts in my area cover car accidents and elementary school festivals, they're not to be taken seriously or watched. Fox is a joke in my eyes and CNN is where I turn when I want a flash of real news.

Why does any political post belong on hot topics? And then why go and comment on such an inappropriately placed post?

I think that CNN is about as middle-ground as exists right now. If anyone has any other stations I'd be glad to hear. But - middle ground is what I want. MSNBC is obnoxiously left wing and FOX is obnoxiously right wing. I want intelligent, balanced (as much as possible) and thought-provoking.

Forgot...I like to see The Guardian now and then.

Suzieque, NPR is good. I don't know what TV news they offer, but their "All Things Considered," on the radio from 4 to 6 p.m. where I live, is excellent. I watch the evening news on NBC, which is different from MSNBC. I would say it's middle of the road. They make an effort to be balanced. But because Trump makes news every day, they report it. It's not the media's fault that his actions consistently reflect badly on him.

Alisande, I feel the same way about NBC's evening news. MSNBC is different from NBC. NBC tries, I think to keep their reporting more factual and their personal opinions out of it. You hear the latest on Frump but then they move on to other things. Afterall, there is a world beyond his big fat head.

Lily, The Kitchen Table is a platform for all kinds of topics and it's not your place to dictate what gets posted here. If you don't feel this is an appropriate topic, please, feel free to pass it by and head over to hot topics. I for one, enjoy talking about this stuff amongst friends here much more than getting slammed for my POV over in Hot Topics and I suspect there are others who feel the same.

I don't know if many here use their iPads or Tablets as their source for information. We only have a very basic satillite package and don't have a lot of news channels to choose from but I really enjoy the app FLIP because it pulls stories from all different news sources so you can get a broader picture of what's taking place.

Alisande, you're right; I do enjoy NPR and forgot about that for the moment. I think it is "left-leaning", but not obnoxiously. I like middle of the road and I can form my own opinions based upon the various sources of information that I get. Thanks for reminding me about NPR. (Off topic, but I also love "Wait, wait, don't tell me!" Haha)

I love "Wait, wait" too. So funny! And I still love "Car Talk" in re-runs.

NPR has the reputation for being left-leaning, but I always remember that my late husband, who was old-school conservative Republican (think William F. Buckley), thought highly of "All Things Considered" and "Weekend Edition," and considered NPR to be his main news source, along with his subscription to the Wall Street Journal.

I mostly watch ABC nightly news, MSNBC when Chris and Rachel are on, and CNN. At the gym occasionally at a commercial, I flip to the next TV to CNN which is FOX. I can only stand about 30 seconds of the propaganda. They don't report news unless it glorifies their leader. Online I read CNN and Huff post. I listen to NPR on the radio.

"The Brainwashing of My Dad" is a fascinating (if poorly titled) documentary about Fox News--why it was started (to promote the Republican party) and the pervasive effect it has had on the viewing public. Somehow Fox has managed to convince its viewers that it tells them things the other networks leave out. But actually the reverse is true.

The movie also discusses the radio entertainers, like Rush Limbaugh. One interesting segment is about a truck driver who always listened to Rush and his ilk while he was on the road--until one day when he happened upon NPR. He was struck by the vastly different tone and approach to the news, as well as the content, and realized how seductive the other programs were.

The movie is alarming but enlightening. Amazon Prime members can watch it free.

PS: The title refers to the filmmaker's father, for most of his life an easygoing, cheerful man, sympathetic to civil rights, a fun-loving father. He turned angry and distant in his later years after right-wing radio shows and Fox News became a constant in his life. I believe it started when he got a job with a long commute, and turned on the radio.

I suspect a different title might have given the movie a wider audience, and that's a shame.

I've heard of this documentary and plan to view it. It won't tell me anything I haven't suspected over the years.

I no longer watch any of the cable news channels on a regular basis. If there is some urgent matter, I will tune in, but our local (NYC) folks do a darned good job of coverage.

I read NY Times (the print version on weekends), The Guardian, Washington Post, BBC News, Asbury Park Press, Politico, The Hill, NPR, PBS. I "Follow" on Facebook a large number of local newspapers, I like to see what people in other parts of the country are thinking and issues that concern their location. We have a lot of common issues, you wouldn't know it from the national talking heads (or the politicians, all parties).

For us, mostly NPR plus European news. Everything else is just the same carp over and over.

By the way, being anti-Trump does not mean being pro-HRC. And many people did not vote for either of them.

I stopped watching "NEWS" on TV years ago. I go to websites where I can scan headlines and decide which "NEWS" I want to read about, rather than watching whatever "NEWS" some station wants to brainwash me with. Foreign news websites give a whole lot of different perspective

I may have to see whether I can find that documentary. When we were growing up if we were walking around listening to rock music our father would rail at us saying "that stuff is going right into your brain and it will reprogram your brain."

Decades later as he would walk around all day with headphones on listening to the various right-wing demagogues, in my opinion, he was proven completely right. His brain was conditioned to believe everything they said and spout it forth on cue.

My wife was talking about a planned trip to visit some of her extended family in France and my father, who had never been to France nor interacted in any way with an actual French person, immediately interrupted with several vile catch phrases belittling and denigrating all of France because the voices in his headphones had repeated them so frequently, because they opposed our illegal, unjustified war on Iraq.

When he finally finished, my wife stared him down and merely said "My entire family is from France" seeming to dare him to say one more thing. Fortunately for everyone he decided to STFU.

I used to like watching the CBS morning news, but since Moonves took over, it's turned to fluff (as are the other network morning shows) -- lots of "headline" fluff and chit chat (gag chatty Gail King make-nice, please), lots of ads and drops to local weather. Dull and lifeless -- they started off so well. First 20 minutes, news. Then lots of ads and weather.

NPR pretty good.

Take a break from political news and enjoy PBS offerings like The Big Pacific, The Making of North America (both really great); Masterpiece Theatre -- Grantchester, Prime Suspect; The Tunnel; Endeavor. Also Midsomer Murders; My Mother and Other Strangers; lots a good stuff later in evening and a lot of programs you can stream.

Sometimes I just pick a subject and read online. Say Ataturk, for example. Read about the founder of modern Turkey. Sadly, Turkey is now regressing. Awful.

The main news sources promote some news and ignore others. Some of the best reporting is not on cable. If it goes contrary to the company funding the show, it won't be shown or worse, they mention it and then bring on an expert to tell us why it's nonsense. Independent newspapers or news magazines need to make a comeback. When all the tv news runs the same stories using the same catchy words, be sceptical.

They're just trying to keep up with all the news about how America is "great again" with Trumpty Dumpty sitting on his wall...

Not so long ago broadcasting networks presented a few minutes of news a day because they had to do it to meet federally mandated licensing requirements.

Then CNN began covering some *actual* Breaking News in depth, and people watched. Ack! An Audience! Networks could make money on some guy reading news. (No need for expensive programing!)

It's been downhill for actual news since then. What we have is a hook upon which to hang advertisements. The Soaps. The News. Same audience-appeal content.

Because there isn't enough NEWS to be sponsored every minute of the day, there's this great taffy pull, stretching out and repeating everything remotely related to news, ad nauseam.

We increasingly see TV 'coverage' completely irrelevant to us, especially if *there's tape* to fill the time. There's so much hype that we no longer see a weather report, we have The XYZ Storm Team reporting the riveting, "Mostly sunny with a chance of rain".

There's always been yellow journalism, seeking to sway a populace. Now we have to parse carefully to find any journalism. We have Constant Programming masquerading as News, Sonsored by those Selling Something -- seeking to define and target an Audience, and hold on to it.
