What do I do next

Ok I've got one Stella that has formed a seed pod. I generally cut the next day but I was slacking last week. I want to take the seeds and grow from seed to fill in the area next year.. how long do I wait to take the seeds out, and what do I do from there? I'm zone 8b, do I need to chill or go straight to soil ? I want to hurry so maybe I can get blooms on them next year too.

I am trying to make a new area in the yard using these daylily seeds, I don't know what color these will come out to be because i dont know what else crossed with it, so I guess I need to know two things, 1. how many seeds should I expect in one pod, 2. if I use two different pods on the same plant will they be the same cross so I can plant it all together and they be the same ?

Same answer as before ......the likelihood of them being the same is almost nil. Seeds don't come true from daylilies. The pod needs to dry on the scape and when ready will start to split open . You might get one seed or you might get a dozen just depends.

You could have had one bee pollinate one pod and a whole different bee pollenate the other one both with different pollens from different plants. . What you get depends on what pollen was the successful bit of pollen that got to the ovary first to fertilize the plant.

It is kind of like kids in a family . The may have same mother and father but none look exactly alike , some may be small others tall , some brown hair some blond , some brown eyes some blue Genetically the pollen can be from totally different plants. You may need to do some reading on pollination to completely understand how it all works. The ONLY way you will get an exact copy of your plant is to split it into individual fans and plant them all separately.

Different roses take different lengths of times to root. I have had some root in 4 to 5 weeks and some take months. I would wait until you see roots out of the bottom of the cups. Then you must "harden" off the plants by opening the bag a little each day and watch for wilting. If the cuttings droop, close the bag. Finally you will be able to leave the bag open all day. then it will be time to take them out of the bag. I usually let them adjust for a few weeks before transplanting into a bigger pot. I have even planted a small cup straight in my garden and forgot it was in a small cup! Found it when I was going to move the rose to another place in the garden.

Hi trillium, I'm a newb, so everything I say is from reading rather than my own experience, but I'll throw my 2 cents in... 1) I'm curious that you've started your seeds in February and you are in Zone 5/Ontario. When do you plan to put your plants in the ground? I'm DYING to start mine but from what I have read, I decided to wait until the end of March to start them, so that they do not have blossoms yet when I put them in the garden (and I'm in Zone 6). What varieties are you growing - are they determinate? Super early? 2) I have not heard of people staking seedlings, only plants that are in the ground. When you did your first repotting, did you bury part of the stem? The conventional wisdom appears to be that with every repotting, especially with leggy seedlings, you make the soil cover up to the first set of leaves. All the buried stem will grow roots. And you plant will suddenly not be so leggy, since some of it is now under dirt! 3) I've never read that it is bad to do too much repotting - every repotting is supposed to be good, I guess because you're giving it new soil that has new nutrients. The discussions seem to be more like, do you need to do more than one repotting. 4) People say that much seedling disadvantage is caused by overwatering. I think you are supposed to wait until the seedlings are pretty dry before you water them - it will cause stronger, bigger roots. I think it is also a no-no to let them stand in water, whether you water from above or below. My conclusion is that the reason this is a common mistake is that tomatoes in the ground need a lot of constant water, so it's easy to assume that seedlings do too, but I guess that is not the case. 5) I don't know about the fertilizer question, but from the reading I've done, it seems like you should not fertilize seedlings unless they start to look not-so-good (like yellow leaves). Now the experts will let you know what I've said that's wrong! :) Good luck.

Just leave them be for now and monitor. If there's condensation on the inside of the container they don't need water. As it gets warmer, some of them might, but usually mine get by on spring rain/melt until it gets much closer to LFD. IMO, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to take the lids off too soon. One 70 or 75 degree day here or there isn't likely to fry them, and as long as the night-time temps are low they can use the protection of the containers. A couple of years ago we had a little bit of a warm up in April. I took the lids off and many of my plants, especially the tomatoes, did not grow -- it just wasn't consistently warm enough. My mistake was totally removing the tops and discarding. I should have just pulled them back then closed them when it got cooler. If you're using milk jugs or 2L bottles, the extra warmth generated by keeping the tops on is more beneficial than not. Again, just monitor -- if the sprouts look like they're drying out, water. If they look like they're suffering from too much heat (wilting, etc.) then open them up during the day and close at night. It all depends on where you are, but if you're getting 70 then 38 then 60 etc. I'd keep the lids on for a while longer. You didn't mention when your LFD is. Mine's around April 30. Until then, the tops are staying on.

sanny2016, welcome back to the World of Sansevierias. I wondered if you were growing other genera for those 30 years, I've known quite a few sans collectors over the years that developed an interest in other plants and changed their focus. Something that could help us help you, please add your zone next to your 'handle', and preferably your location as well. Regarding advice, it helps to know if someone's in another country, a northern or southern tier state, etc. We already know you're in an apartment, which obviously limits your growing space. So any idea what kind of collection you'd like to have? Some folks like mostly variegates, some choose the many trifasciata varieties, others grow whatever piques their interest. Still others like me collect any and all they can find. You might prefer smaller species and varieties in order to have as many different plants as possible in your space. The very interesting spoon-leaf species come to mind, and of course the trifasciata Hahnii group. There are quite a few growers here that often have extra plants to share or trade, so you might let us know what those special sans are that you can't live without. Realizing you probably don't have trade material, many of us can do 'for postage' offers. I've heard of the cultivar named 'Alice Waidhofer' but have never seen it, so thanks for that picture. Alice is one of the original pioneer collectors of sansevierias, she retired from collecting some years ago. I hope she is happy and well wherever she is, what a wonderful lady. She helped me get my start in serious collecting nearly 20 years ago. Russ

interesting ! So in one pod, they will all be the same height, color, etc. ? Or are you saying even in pod they can still have differences.

That is what we have been trying to explain . Any seeds in the same pod will be different. 2 pods ( same thing..... different)

The only way to get an identical plant is to divide a clump , Each of those fans will be identical otherwise everything from any seed pod will be different in some way .

So to recap .....you want identical you divide a clump .......you plant seeds .they will all be different .
