Apple tree has canker on trunk just an inch above the ground

Just planted a 5' apple tree last spring and our landscapers hacked it with the lawnmower about 6 weeks ago. i cut into the bark with sterile knife just above wound and saw orange in the bark, went further and still more orange color. the damage circles half way around the trunk right now. my guess is it's a malignant situation and will end up dying at some point. such a shame bc it was fruiting already and doing so well. makes me sad :(

my question is - since the damage can be air born, should i remove this tree all together right now so it doesn't end up infecting other plants in our yard?
