First the bad news...

My husband thought it would be a good idea to let his "angels" play in the back yard resulting in the damage to the hostas that i just bought at Chuck Plemmons and got in the ground last weekend. I'm telling you if i didn't need his help digging holes this southern girl with redneck tendencies would be looking at assault/animal abuse charges . Damaged are touch of class, holey moley, chief sitting bull from chucks, and regal splendor that i already had.

oh-woah- woah... that is a shame, but not like the pets knew better... just time for some guard railing or slight fencing for the hosta beds so everyone and everything can live in harmony. :) :) ;)

I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner and rather than toss out the water that my kids didn't finish, I brought it outside to water my zinnias. And it was then that I noticed that two of the leaves, had that famous lacy pattern. I said outloud, I wonder what's been eating you. And I looked around and sure enough, two Japanese Beetles were munching away. I went into the garage and pulled out my neem oil, mixed up a batch and set off spraying. Dang, I hate these bugs. This will be my first year using neem, so I hope it works well. Oh, both buggers are no longer of this world!!!

Duhhhh, I mean, what if it kills a slug intent on eating a WEED not a HOSTA....I mean, is there an issue of killing a GOOD slug moral issue to be resolved? You know how they say life forms have sensitivities and sensabilities, and after all a slug IS a "life form"........but I haven't removed the tape, I like it. So what if bait scattered in the moist areas and NOT in the pots is what reduced the slug problem. I'd use both option A. Copper Tape and B. Bait .....regardless.

Diane Our local forecasters don't have rain in our forecast either, but they've been known to be wrong once or twice. I've linked the SPC's Convective page so you can see the slight risk area they have circled. Notice how you and I are outside of it but inside the other circled area. The text that explains their reasoning follows, if you want to read it and try to decipher the scientific gobblygook. The area outside the slight risk area also has a chance of something happening, but a fairly low one. For the folks in northern OK, Dr. Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel increased his TorCon rating for northern OK from a 4 to 5 this morning, meaning that he gives northern OK a 50% chance of having a tornado somewhere. He usually picks a city and then the actual 50 percent chance would be within 50 miles of that city, but he didn't name a city this morning...he just said 'northern Oklahoma'. For comparison's sake, he gave northern Oklahoma a TorCon rating of 8 on Monday, and we all know what happened. Diane, I like for the rain to fall in nice even batches too so nothing drowns, but we get whatever we get. This morning, TWC said some parts of the Great Plains could get a month's worth of rain in the next wave of storms that begins tomorrow and lasts several days. They didn't say which parts of the Great Plains though. When I come back inside for lunch, I'll try to find and link their national precip forecast map so we can see what we might be expecting here. Well, the sponges in the filter are falling apart so I will need to get a new one of those, the flexible piping refuses to stay connected properly to the in-pond filter, and the pumps a gonna, thats why i was looking to replace it all. I could just by the same thing all over again, but I would prefer not having to plunge my hand into the icy cold pond at this time of year to recover the filter from the bottom for it's weekly wash out. Was thinking of an external filter type setup. Thanks for you ideas, will definatly look at the pumps. Phil V

Hello, I feel your frustration, My "angels" which lovingly go by alternate names of dumba$$ and Jacka$$, do not respect my gardens either. Spring time means 4 foot plastic/ metal fencing for around the pond gardens, and lawn chairs and tomato cages strategically placed in the others. Once the pips are unfurling I start taking away the block aids. The hosta bed along the side of the property has a permanent fence otherwise this garden would be destroyed. During the summer the other gardens fair ok for the most part they are a size now the dogs don't run through the beds unless they are chasing the evil squirrel. The defense mechanisms are a pain to put up take down, and look ugly, but... since Im not getting rid of the dogs or hosta this is what I do. - If money were not an issue I could come up with more attractive means of keeping the dogs out. Invisible fence for the dogs, motion activated water sprayer, decorative fencing that would compliment the hosta. Oh one other thought Leaving a path through the plants helps, my dogs when cruising the yard theywill take the path of least resistance, fights and squirrels aside. Good luck and do try to forgive the bad beasts they are clueless,but not meaning to be hurtful to you, not like evil squirrels.

Ugh. The only ones I put out back where the fur babies roam are the excess common ones I don't care about. The smaller of our dogs has a bad habit of sitting on plants when it gets hot.

I must be lucky, my 4 shih tzus stay out of my garden beds, my daughters collie also stays out of the gardens. I wish I could train the squirrels and the rabbits.

I put tomato cages over hostas small enough to need protction. Knock wood, my two angels are small and sedate. Wish I could say the same for the neighbor's Great Danes. Love frogged's dogs nicknames.
