Trim color in kitchen expansion / addition?

Jody H

We expanding our kitchen and adding on a mud room/entry and laundry room. The rest of our main floor has dark oak trim. The goal is to make the kitchen feel like the original house as much as possible, but still within reason for our budget.

We're planning to install white or light gray Shaker style cabinets and will continue the same wood flooring from the rest of the main floor into the kitchen.

My question: does it make sense to keep the same trim in the kitchen or switch to white trim? Will the kitchen look as though it doesn't fit the rest of the house if the trim is all white? Can I have dark trim and white cabinets?

Any thoughts are appreciated!
