Convert wood fireplace to electric, reduce the size

I have a condo with a wood fireplace that I'm looking to close. It doesn't really get used, a lot of people don't want it and it's a waste of heat most of the time. The opening of the fireplace is 36" wide by 27" high. That's a big fireplace. I'm wondering if there's a safe way to reduce this size of the opening for a slide in electric unit or if there are other options of which I'm not thinking right now.

You can see a picture of the fireplace here. The surround is held on by 4 screws. I'm thinking of pulling it off myself to see what's in there. I'm not finding many electric options for inserts that are that big.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
