New Range needed_Am I crazy to stick with Electric Coils?
Comments (50)>>>"Way better than a propane countertop option."<<< Well, if you have generator the next time Texas gets cold. . . :>) Good countertop induction cookers (a/k/a Portable Induction Cooktops or PICs) can be "way better" as long as you have power, but many of the inexpensive models are seriously deficient when it comes to a "design for those who want more stove top temperature control" as Jan DeKenis sought. If considering buying a PIC to check out induction, you might want to have a look at recent articles at Cooks Illustrated, CenturyLife, and Wirecutter to get some recommendations on choosing one of the better PIC models. When it comes to full scale electric cooking appliances, though, Pittsburrito is correct that induction stoves and cooktops are very much the electric option with as much (sometimes more) "stovetop temperature control" than gas appliances....See MoreWorthwhile to Convert Oil Boiler to Propane or Not?
Comments (27)Tekmar control systems have been in use for years now. They have been installed on both residential and commercial projects we were involved with. My understanding is that they have an outdoor reset that monitors the exterior temperature and adjust the boiler temperature to meet the heating needs. If it is cold (0 degrees) they let the boiler fire at max temperature or what ever upper limit that is set. If it is a mild day (45 degrees) that may only allow the boiler to fire to say 145 degrees and provide for a moderate heating temperature. New boilers like Buderus have the option of Logamatic controller which does a similar thing. They will make old boilers more efficient, but new boilers with these controls are even better. Apparently Buderus even makes a oil fired condensing boiler which is 91% efficient. With gas or oil boilers the lower water temperatures can only be reached with these type of boilers as condensation will occur and they are designed for this. If your boiler is good and you install a tekmar you will save money. If you need an upgrade then the new boilers will save on oil consumption, but cost a lot more to buy and install. Tekmar will also control the indirect water heater. These type of boiler controls can prioritize the hot water and fire the boiler at a much higher temperature when hot water is needed. You have a lot of choices from adding controls to your existing system, changing to a new higher efficient boiler with integrated controls, or even going up to a condensing oil boiler with integrated controls. If you are remaining in the house for years to come then maybe replacement in the long run is best. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and still want to save the Tekmar will definitely help and make the house more comfortable. I am not n HVAC contractor, but we have these systems installed on all our projects or they come with new boilers we are installing. I am sure installers can explain better than I can as to exactly how these controllers work. I have a gas fired boiler with outdoor reset built in and it worked great this winter. It is the same principle as the Tekmar and it controls a modulating condensing gas boiler....See MoreConverting gas range to propane with kit
Comments (16)Well we are extremely lucky we needed to install a conversion kit and didn't just hook this oven up. We had the propane supplier send out a serviceperson to install the conversion kit and he couldn't believe this floor model oven was sold to us. It was missing a burner tube and the broiler element, so he said if we had hooked it up and turned it on it would have exploded.! so i can not tell you how we thankful we are for all of your advice! I almost cried when he told us..he was really shocked they sold us it. The oven is going back to the store and we are negotiating with them as they want to refund our, oney. But we have invested delivery of 3 hrs, bought the kit, a griddle pan, a service call, and now had to haul it back 3 hrs. The same oven brand new is $900 and I bought this floor model for $ 500 that was supposedly just mixing the box. We got them down in price but my husband is insisting on no addtl cost after all this hassle and the safey issue involved. Really scary.. Never thought of the risk in buying an oven that was a floor model! So thank you ...!!!!!!!...See MoreConverting Propane range back TO natural gas...
Comments (4)Have you actually tried getting this taken care of? Did you buy the range from a retailer or pick it up at a yard sell? Something is wrong about what you have told us. A. All reputable retailers include a user's manual with gas appliances(their lawyers insist on it). B. A user manual is not as difficult to get hold of as you are letting on. C. Converting from propane to ng is simply the reverse of ng to propane. D. Anyone who doesn't know how to switch between fuels should not be trusted to install gas appliances. E. There gas been no kit required for more than 3 decades, simply turn a coule of screws. F. The average home handyman can easily figure it out by simply lifting the top cover and reading what it say's on the rating plate and pressure regulator....See Morepractigal
