Zucchini not getting any bigger
Comments (16)I have 3 zucchinis that I planted too close together, about 4 feet for all 3. They had been super-fertilized, and the plants grew fast, but the fruits were not found by the bees at first. After a while, I self-pollinated a few, and that helped, then the bees found a few and did the job, now the zukes get pollinated, but grow very slowly. They do get pollinated, but the leaves on these 3 plants are MASSIVE. I will probably pull the middle plant, to help the bees get in to the ones that are bearing the best. And I haven't fertilized them anymore, as all I'm doing is making the huge leaves get bigger and put out more leaves, not growing zucchini. Plants actually do produce quite well without tons of fertilizer, as a little scarcity tells them it's time to complete their cycle, produce their fruit and seeds, and eventually die and turn to compost. You said you got your plants at Home Depot, and they were really big, so it sounds like they might have an excess of fertilizer. Too much nitrogen (the first number in a 3 number mix) in particular will cause a lot of leaf growth. Phosphorus and Potassium help with root growth and overall plant health, respectively. And all due respect to lgteacher, the female flower has a tiny zucchini at its base, and the male flower attaches directly to the zucchini plant, no little zucchini. Lg is right that males tend to come first, but he had it backwards. Sorry, I don't know or remember the site it came from, but everyone who tries it seems to like it. I also don't know if it can be processed successfully. Quick Zucchini Pickles 3 medium zucchini (1 pound / 16 oz / 450 g), thinly sliced 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced 3 shallots, thinly sliced 1 1/2 tablespoons fine grain sea salt 1/4 cup (small handful) fresh dill sprigs 1 small fresh red chile pepper, very thinly sliced *** 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds *** 3/4 cup / 180 ml cider vinegar 3/4 cup / 180 ml white wine vinegar 1/3 cup / 1.75 oz / 50g natural cane sugar Toss the zucchini, onion, shallots, and salt together in a colander and place over a bowl to catch the liquids. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least a couple hours. Toss once or twice along the way. You're aiming to get as much liquid out of the zucchini as possible. When you're finished draining the zucchini, shake off any water. At this point you want the zucchini as dry as possible. Place in a 1 liter / 1 quart jar along with the dill, chile pepper, and mustard seeds. Combine the ciders and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves, and continue to boil for a few minutes. Pour the liquid over the zucchini and seal the jar. Let cool, then refrigerate. The pickles are good for a week or so. Comments (24)Bumblebeez, there are recipes all over Google for toppings. The one I linked with Feta sounded good to me, but it was more than I wanted to do. Sprinkling it with some Parm and some Trader Joe’s Quattro Frommagio was good too. Reminded me of Eggplant Parm, so a little tomato sauce of some sort might work well too. rhizo, it squeaks with every chew. I’m chewing my food and its going ”eek, eek, eek,…” I don’t get little eeks with mushrooms. It’s sort of like when you cut styrofoam with a knife only less. There is one other way I’ll eat zucchini. Thinly sliced and placed in a single layer on a sheet pan, then drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with finely grated parm. Cook until the parm takes on a deep golden hue. Comments (26)If you don’t want the work of a quiche, you can make a frittata. I make a side dish for dinner with cubed zucchini and chopeed onions, sauteed in a little olive oil until translucent, then add a can of diced tomatoes (or a bunch a fresh ones if I have a glut). Stew together until hot, then serve. Or brush slices of zucchini with olive oil and fry, then toss with small cubes of soft feta or goat’s cheese....See Moremamapinky0
