interested in star/heart molds to grow cucumbers/zucchini in?
Comments (23)I am an idiot.. I didn't even bother thinking about what size my cucumbers will become compared to what size cucumber will fit in the mold... I planted Sweet Success cucumber seeds and found a forum of people discussing it and people have posted pictures...these cucumbers get huge and fat! I don't think these will be suitable for the molds... unless they grow long before they grow fat... but I doubt that. I found a website of one store here in Dubai that says they have a cucumber variety named "Soarer" that I thought would be perfect for these molds but they were sold out when I went... :( The only alternative I could find was a cucumber named Beit Alpha. I think these can still grow to be fat cucumbers but I am hoping I can just pick them while small and they will do find in the molds. I don't think I will order seeds of different varieties from overseas because of time/seasonal issues. It will start getting too hot I think by the time the plant is big enough... I should have read more about the Sweet Success variety before... I just liked the description that they are easy to grow and don't need pollination so I bought them....See Moreyellowing leaves cucumber and zucchini plants
Comments (7)"Daily watering" is almost always over-watering. Add rain and it definitely becomes too much water. But in this case i suspect lack of any nutrients is the main issue. They need to be fed. All plants need to be fed something and in containers it needs to be fed regularly.. I would normally recommend one of the many organic liquid fertilizers available but in order to recover from the excess water, a granular one would work better this time. There are probably 35-40 different organic granular fertilizers available so it all depends on what you can find locally. Any of the big box stores like Walmart, Home depot, Lowe's etc sell them, so do most nurseries. Follow the label directions for amount and frequency of application. Comments (1)If the leaves are only wilting during the day, it is likely they are just not heat tolerant as the plants that are not wilting. if they are small enough you could try a large row cover of bug screen while the sun is so hot. day wilt is perfectly normal. they should perk up fine at night and early in the day before the sun cooks out the moisture. my OG book recommends a bug screen FRC with pex tubing supports. Although this was recommended for protecting cold crops, not squash, so use your own judgement. the screen lets plenty of sunlight through, but not the burning heat that wilts the fragile plants. it would also cut down on the beetles. though fertilizing could be reduced, unless you keep plenty of openings for benificial polinators....See Moreinterested in star/heart molds to grow cucumbers/zucchini in?
Comments (8)I now own several gnome molds as well as heart and diamond molds for zukes and other looong veggies. I got 'em right at the end of the growing season last year so I had nothing growing well enough to make them work. But this year i plan on growing eggplant gnome as well as molded zukes for my CSA members (kids ought to get a kick out of such things as well as many of my adult members). It turns out the son of a colleague of my late father was the guy who invented the gnome veggie mold and he is a FB friend and he sent me a big box of the molds (he is no longer in the veggie mold business so he doesn't sell' em). It will be fun using them this season...See MoreCA Kate z9
