I am wearing a rose gold wedding band that has been worn every day since the 6th of June, 1945. It was my grandmother's wedding band. She promised to give it to me when I was five years old. My husband wears my grandfather's. I wear the plain gold stacked with my diamond band which is made of platinum and yellow gold and that looks great- and I wear it stacked with my engagement ring, which has a yellow band as well. Congratulations on your 25th anniversary (I'm at 23 :-)

My husband's wedding band is rose gold, and he's worn it for about 10 years straight. It has held up longer than his yellow-gold band did.

As you stated, rose gold isn't plated. It wears as well as yellow gold. Since YOUR designing the ring...? I'd pay attention to the details of the mounting. Peekaboo stones are a BIG deal right now.

Oh yes, I am designing every facet of this little beauty. I'm afraid I tend to try to use all my favorite ideas at once, so I've urged the jeweler to reign me in if I slip into my "Wild Gypsy Rose/Too Much is Not Enough" phase.

In my question about "rose gold," I was concerned that even though it's a solid karat gold, I wondered if the higher (as opposed to yellow gold) copper content might cause any skin discoloration. I may ask the jeweler about the "Crown Gold / Red Gold" 22k form, depending on the price and wearability differences.

I'd love a peek-a-boo stone, but with the pear shaped center stone, I think we're going with prongs similar to this...

But nothing is set "in stone" yet.

Scott, the jeweler, is suggesting a "Euro Shank." Once he gets the CAD drawings with all my choices, I'll try a Euro shank on to see how I like it.

Mine won't be this heavy; my center stone is only 3/4 carat.

Here's a rose gold ring that gave me the idea for a Celtic knot on the shoulders. I think I'd want my "knot" a bit smaller.

Honestly, I don't like the rose gold. I'd keep to yellow gold if that matches your other jewelry.

I have my mother's rose gold watch which my father sent her from another country in 1943! Has slight wear on back of case, to be expected. She wore if for years. I hope you are very pleased with the ring you design!

I think yellow gold would compliment purple amethysts better than rose gold would. But I have never cared for the really high sticking up settings that have been so popular in the past 40 years or so. I would think they would be prone to catching on things and either damaging them (snagging clothing etc) or damaging/losing the setting.

I find rose gold scratches more easily and has a dull soft glow due to that. It is a lovely color and when compared to yellow gold jewelry, it almost as if the yellow gold has a greenish cast.

I love the look of rose gold, I just don't think it will coordinate with your amethyst stone. Do the gold.

Regarding wear: DH's wedding band is yellow gold with rose gold bands of differing (narrow) widths all around the slightly rounded exterior perimeter; plain yellow gold inside. You see a striated effect, not separate bands. He's worn it for almost 53 years. I don't see any difference in the wear between the two colors.

My grandfather's 'love knot' wedding ring is rose gold. I had the band made smaller for me, but I seldom wear any rings other than my engangement/wedding band. (Jeweler fused a second band to my engagement ring when we married.)

I hate to say it, Caroline, but...while I admire a colored stone with diamond surround, I'm less thrilled with the reverse. A colored gem stands out and is enhanced by a bright diamond surround. OTOH, a diamond can look 'hedged in' by dark stones. A lively diamond benefits from light from beneath and all sides, hence the raised profiles -- and halogen lights in jewelry stores.

There's more work and material involved in setting individual stones in separate raised prong settings. Small diamonds warrant the work; less sure about amethists. You might bezel set some amethists into the band -- but not down so far that they rub adjacent fingers. Diamonds are #10 hardness. Amethists are #7.

Nicole's peridot is lovely in that gorgeous heavy gold setting, with the diamonds set into the gold.

My pear diamond is set slightly raised, in platinum, with two small emerald shaped baguettes set into the band on each side. All the diamonds are matching grade. My DIL puzzled recently why her round diamond doesn't 'look' as big as mine. We concluded that it's because her diamond is solitare, while the diamond baguettes on mine add refraction on each side. My 'pear' is also slightly angled -- not set straight on -- as was the style at the time. That may also confuse the eye when the ring is on a moving hand. My stone is superior clarity. Hers is superior cut.

I believe the pear shape exists because it can yield a greater carat weight from some raw stones; a round cut would eliminate the pointed end, knocking off weight.

Chisue...I "do" agree with you on the design of the ring. That's why I posed the single colored stone on the side, a peekaboo stone. Vera Wang uses that style a lot in her designs. Your pear shaped diamond is a lot of bang for your buck. :0) It really is a pleasing shape to look "generous".

I also agree with the amethyst surrounding the diamond taking away from it. I love the celtic knot and think it would be very pretty with the diamonds along the band but not surrounding the diamond. I have a few rose gold pieces and they wear great.

I love rose gold and the celtic knot. I agree with the others, if you use rose gold, I would not use amethysts. I actually really, really like the ring you posted with the celtic knots and rose gold. I would eliminated the stones down the side, let your gorgeous pear stone be the star.

Pure gold is a soft malleable metal. It is easily deformed. It needs to be alloyed with another metal to harden it.

I don't understand the dislike of amethyst and rose gold (see below)? I love the pear shaped stone and Celtic knots though! To each their own. But I love jewelry like others like plants. They're all beautiful children and I could no sooner pick a favorite child.
