Finally beautiful blooms... and a couple problem childs.

Some of my roses are finally blooming and we are nearing July. I guess the growing season is cut shorter this year. Nonetheless here's some of my roses I thought I'd share.

In a reply is a couple problem children that maybe someone here could help recognize the issue. I can't seem to figure it out.

James Galway

Wedgwood, very thripy this year.

Eden, another thrip magnet.

Green Romantica, ignore the diatom shells on the leaves.

Blue for You

I have two mystery roses.

Number 2 mystery but love how it glows. It's a lot darker and truer red irl.

I forgot Rasberry Twirl!
Here is a bloom shot of the red mystery in case someone recognizes it. Would love to know what it is darnit. Roses last 20 days until it shatters.

Now for the two problems.

Sharifa Asma in the ground.

And both Blue Girl's in pots are doing this. None of my other roses in pots are having issues and all are in the same soil. I have fertilized these a while back at the beginning of the season but it's rained a lot and wondering if the nutes were leeched. I may just replace them with container appropriate roses. I have another Blue girl in the backyard and I love the fragrance but they tend to have blackspot and problems often here in rainy Oregon.

Mystery rose #1 looks like Either Climbing America or Montezuma. Contestant #2 looks like a lot of roses out there. Closest thing I've seen to it would be Legends. Great job!

Elina/Peaudouce is very robust in Illinois---I've seen huge specimens of it growing in several gardens I've visited north of I-80. It's healthy & hardy. Don't believe the HMF classification of 7b; I believe 5 is more appropriate. That being said, it may not be exactly what you're looking for. It's not the glamour gal that Julia Child is. Elina is a very subdued yellow and whenever I've seen it, I'd call it more "off-white". I grow St Patrick instead, which I've heard can be a stretch for my zone, but it's doing fine. What do other folks think about that rose if she's going to overwinter it in a garage? If bright yellow & double form are the criteria, it fits.....but it's not as strongly scented as Elina.

mantis: I don't grow CIMARRON ROSE so can't comment on it. Val: I have not noticed any splotchiness on PAINTING THE ROSES RED as much as I've seen it happen on other cultivars. I know it is said it is attributed to thrips but sometimes I wonder if that is really the only cause. I did spray this year but perhaps I should have done a second round of it but then with all the weather issues, I didn't think it would be wise. Thanks all for the comments. The seedling will continue to hold a spot here. :D. Very hot/humid here today. Hope we get a cool down tomorrow. I need to get back to moving plants. Julia

I am very surprised at the beauty of Jewel of Jewels since it was a bonus on the auction, Nancy. Neon Flamingo is such a beauty, I hope it performs for you. A good Forum friend who no longer posts her, New York Rita, gave me my start of Philistine Champion and it has been a really good plant here ever since I got it. Both of you commented on Little Light of Mine. It has always performed wonderfully here for no reason I can figure, but Debra said hers is looking to do very well this time, so that is good...maye it is just a really good plant. Sherry, It is 6 x36 but such a gigantic plant. Sometimes the blooms have been larger but not enough to consider it larger than 6. Kate, Yes I've been pleased with the colors I get. One thing I do, besides try to improve favorites or get good characteristics from some [shape, substance, bud count, etc], is consider Bob Carr's chart that shows which colors most often give what results. Generally Purple and Lavender are dominant. The only thing more dominant are tan and buff, and I have none of those [I used to have Milk Chocolate but got rid of it]. Kublakan, I was thinking the same thing. It looks so similar to America. I don't know Montezuma. I'll look it up. The only thing that stands out with number two is how long the rose lasts on the stem; which is 20 days before it starts to even remotely look inferior and then it shatters. It shatters still looking beautiful. I'm not sure if that is normal for red roses though as it's my first and only red rose.

lisaam, I totally agree because I have never really seen eden do that type of opening before! Love this rose and it's nice disease resistance. I just hate the thrips.
