Want to start a fig tree from a shoot I dug up
Comments (2)At this time of year and with the drought and heat hitting Texas I would pot it up into a 2 gallon size pot. Depending on how tall the sprout is I would consider topping it to match the root system and then put it in deep shade until it get's over the separation. Don't over water but watch it closely, pots dry out fast and it might need water every few days or sooner. You might use some of the local clay soil in the pot along with some potting mix. The clay will help retain moisture. I would also over winter it inside this coming winter and plant it in ground in the spring after the frosts are over. "gene"...See MoreHow do I keep squirrels from digging up my new lawn?
Comments (4)Lucky me, I guess, because I have Kentucky bluegrass. There are endless squirrels around here. I have heard of a fundraiser for a country fire department that holds a competition for shooting squirrels. Maybe I can get them to hunt in my yard this year....See MoreWhite Oak Seedlings Putting Up Shoots in Autumn
Comments (2)"Natural" for a white oak is rooting in autumn, shooting in spring. Neither the literature nor my looking at the ground around white oaks around here supports the hypothesis that this is normal behaviour for them. I didn't store them. They went immediately into planting because they were germinating on the ground. They're potted, were outside but I brought them inside to keep them from the frost tonight. Keeping plants indoors is only difficult if you don't know what you're doing with regards to temperatures, light, humidity, substrates, fertilizing, and watering. I, as my hobbies can attest, do. There is no need to go with the usual routine about trees not being houseplants; I'm growing these for bonsai. I'm simply looking for information on a particular family of oaks. I'm in SE Michigan, Zone 5b. And while we're talking down to one another, that's not what ellipses are for, and usage of multiple punctuation points is a sign of a diseased mind, not an effective means of communication....See MoreHow to get from boring oak to "cerused oak" finish for cabinets?
Comments (33)cor, I don't even know what you did here. the wood needs to be complete stripped bare. you need to keep the grain open when applying the dye/and the liming wax. did you dilute your shellac 50/50 w/denatured alcohol? did you read the link w/all the directions? yes,,you had a major fail. this was a good oak piece that would have taken a nice ceruse, if done correctly. I said it was an insane amount of work. no shortcuts can be done w/this. now you know. this is raw oak. not a stitch of stain or color on it. I left the grain a little raised for better absorption. this is how that table should look before you even start those doors should be taken off to work on and that whole piece should be somewhere where you can strip and sand it. did I mention it takes hours and hours? you can't just sand off half the stain, put on new stain, shellac and liming wax! doesn't work that way....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
