I had to go back up and look at that iceberg again. It really does have a face on the left side and even an ear in the middle. No icebergs down here in Georgia so I really do enjoy all of your iceberg pictures. I don't always comment, but I sure do enjoy everyone's pictures.

These gentlemen on the island of Madeira were playing some game of cards where they would lunge forward and throw their card down in an attempt to play before someone else. It was the only time I've seen a card game that would qualify as aerobic exercise. They were hanging out killing time waiting to take tourists for a ride in a sled down the steep streets of the town. This British couple from the group I was with seem to be having a great time.

Casey, I would so love to go hiking with you. Not only would I see all that beauty, but maybe I would even learn how to take better pictures of it all. Here is some 'beauty' from my flowers yesterday. First Pennsylvania Leatherwing Beetle I have seen this year. A voracious aphid eater.

Oh yes, there will be beans, and thank goodness, they aren't on our property. The house next door that has been empty and uncared for in the last 9 years, had just one huge mature tree. But is these last 9 years Catalpas have come up all over and are now bearing flowers. Love their perfume and the flowers, but the huge leaves and the beans travel well come fall. Catalpas around here are considered junk trees. There are 3 non bearing ornamental Catalpas on that property that anyone would consider to be dead. This is one of the 3 ornamental Catalpa there. A short, about 12', rounded crown tree. Still the extra large leaves, but no flowering. The trunks on all 3 are split like this and mostly hollow, but they leafed out beautifully again this year.

Part of Dawes Glacier in Alaska. The lighter colored rock is where the glacier used to be. That retreat has occurred within the last 5 years.

More Pompeii photos. 1st shows the wide expanse and lovely architecture of the area, especially the arches. According to Wikipedia, "The Romans
were the first builders in Europe, perhaps the first in the world,
fully to appreciate the advantages of the arch, the vault and the dome." 2nd - a street also showing wide expanse. 3rd - "speed bumps" on the street to discourage some types of traffic.

I love all the pics! Love the birds and history today. I just got a new phone and I have been trying to post but it's been acting up and not letting me. I will keep trying :)

stacey, I got some additional explanations of the "speed bumps" from the guide I had. I was told that these had a dual purpose of allowing pedestrians to cross rain-flooded streets without getting their feet wet as well as to discourage large carts. The slots between the large stones were made to be the standard size for smaller commercial and household carts that were permitted within the town. As the guides were Italian, I'm sure each individual's imagination influenced their words.

An important enabler of Roman building was their discovery of a form of cement. All the stone and masonry structures that exist to this day - The Colosseum et al, and not the least of which the magnificent aquaducts that are all over Italy and France - could not have been constructed without cement.

Thank you for that added information, Elmer, especially for mentioning the ancient Romans and their discovery (or invention) of a form of cement. I had wanted to mention this to co-travelers during our trip, but wasn't sure if I remembered it correctly from my old university class. I plan to follow up my scanty memory of whether it is true that many medieval buildings in Europe were built by fitting stones together, since cement technology was unknown to them at the time.

It's not a great picture, but I'm excited! Put up seven out of ten fence posts in one day. I think I can finish my almost free fence (the posts are free and the fence will be $150ish) by this weekend. Woohoo!

It is not easy to make out really, but there were grooves in the stones on either side of those barriers where countless carts rolled on their way.

Rob333- we had a gorgeous sunset tonight too, it had more red than usual. I wonder why some nights the sunsets are more red, or plum or orange.
