anyone ever paint their brown wood furniture white / cream?
Comments (7)Recently I bought (after measuring very carefully to make sure they were not too tall!) floor to ceiling dark brown, stained and lacquered bookcases from a store that was going out of business and selling (or basically giving away) their display cases. I filled in a few screwholes with plastic wood, lightly sanded a few rough areas, painted the cases inside and out with a good-quality white primer (this is the essential step!), sanded away any drip marks, and then finished with two coats of the same paint my daughter and son-in-law had used to paint the woodwork in the house they had recently bought. I had a handyman bolt them to the walls on either side of the living room fireplace and then add trim around the top which matches the rest of that in the room. The bookcases look completely built in. They were excellent quality pieces with crown moldings and striated rails---they look wonderful!! No one would ever guess in their previous life they were old brown dismanteled display cases from a store that had gone out of business! Paint will do wonders. As for the pulls, don't dream of trying to paint them-- take one of the old ones to Home Depot or a local hardware store. They will help you buy new ones which will fit the existing holes (never try to drill new holes--that leads to real problems which a coat of paint can't fix!!) Good luck with your daughter's room--I know it will be beautiful and she will appreciate your hard work as my daughter and her husband did....See MoreDoes anyone else get emotionally attached to their furniture?
Comments (59)I've never been attached to furniture, but I remember when I was little,we would travel from Alabama to Wisconsin every summer to visit family. We always stayed at grandmas. Grandma had this light blue shag carpet in the living room. I never really thought much about it until when I was about 18 or so, mom announced that all grandmas kids were going to chip in and replace the 30 year old carpet at grandmas house. I was very upset, and to my surprise ALL 5 of my siblings were too. She ended up choosing a light blue, non shag carpet. That helped, but not much. That house never felt the same again. She also had this big painting of a lovely Spanish woman. My grandpa was in insurance, and the painting was a payment to him. (She always called it "grandpa's other woman") I don't know why,I always loved it. Those are really the only two things that stick with me about her house. She died last year. A few weeks ago, mom and all 9 of her remaining siblings got together to clean out the house. Imagine my delight when a large box arrived on my doorstep, containing that painting. It's very big and old fashioned, and does not go with anything in the house, but it will be displayed on the hall wall with love....See MoreDoes painted and stained furniture dictate a decorating style?
Comments (16)Just a quick history. The reason I went this route was because someone posted a pic of their new BR set. I realized it looked just like what I have but without those da** birds! Several people thought I was crazy and didn't understand what "eagles" I was talking about! I had pictures of breaking off the eagles but I must have deleted them, and truthfully, posting pictures on this board is a nightmare for me-there must be an easier way but I haven't found it. First (and most important), look at the hardware. The spot in the front where the handles fit in must be 1 piece to the back. Sometimes the screw holes are in the wings and the handle fits in to another spot. The "eyelets" should be 1 piece with the eagle soldered to it. I tried several methods at first until I found the easiest one for me. Anyway. Be careful (you don't want to snap the handle). I took a vice grip at the edge of the wing and kept bending it until the handle released (here's where you need to be VERY careful). I took off the handle and then kept bending the wings until the eyelet released. The other side is easy because the handle is off. You then have 2 plain brass eyelets with a handle. I actually found it easier for the rest of them to attach the handle to my vice and took a little hacksaw to cut through the first eagle wing to release the handle (less chance of snapping the handle). Does this make sense? If not, I can take a couple of pictures and post on the HGTV board, much easier to post pictures. Good luck and let me know....See MoreCan anyone suggest a honey toned non distressed engineered wood floor?
Comments (1)You need to go to a professional flooring store. In person. There are probably over a thousnd possible choices available that meet your criteria. Not a fan of non naitive woods. Oak, hickory, pecan, rustic maple, all of those are durable floor sources when you purchase from a reputable manufacturer....See MoreFun2BHere
