Comments (2)Hi Wilmoth- I would like to trade some Datura stramonium seeds that I harvested from my garden two years ago. They are still viable, I've tested them for germination. Please take a look at my trade list also. If you are interested I would like some of your poppies if you have any left. Thanks so much- flora26...See MoreSingle cherry and single apple tree for SW Pa
Comments (1)Do you like cherry pie? I would suggest planting a good pie cherry like Montmorency, very commonly sold. In the stores and at the markets it seems like you can buy sweet cherries by the bushel load but not sour cherries/pie cherries. Also good for jam. That's what I would plant. But I love cherry pie and jam and would freeze some or can some for future use, so getting a tree would be a way for me to have a product that is hard to find otherwise. Same goes for apples, I'd plant something that isn't a dime a dozen in the stores. Don't know what the self polinating apples are. If you would go with two, I would use a Dolgo crab for the pollinator. Crab apples make wicked good applesauce, and I've eaten Dolgo, they are sweet for a crab. Will pollinate any other tree so then you can take your pick. Otherwise, Google self-polinating apples to see what your options are. You can get a couple kinds grafted onto one tree, but I dunno, seems kinda weird to me but what do I know, I grow crabs. My favorite apple is Empire. I've had good luck growing Cortlands. Both of those are very common though. My mom fondly remembers Northern Spy growing up. That's less common and I have no experience with it. Another one I might grow, just for the name, is Winesap. Also depends on if you want a pie apple, a canning apple, a storage apple or an eating apple. That's why I like Empires, they are good for sauce, pies and eating out of hand. Don't know about them for storage though. I've never grown an Empire apple either....See MoreSingle Oven/Advantium or single oven with microwave drawer
Comments (5)I love this subject. As much as I love the look and performance concept of two ovens, I can't commit the space or resources. Here is what we are doing: 1 wall oven (probably monogram) 1 krups fbc-4 toaster oven (there are many reviews on amazon) 1 microwave, plain for now, but may upgrade to panasonic genius prestige convection microwave based on needs. 1 solar oven (not sure what model yet) Why am I doing this? Like many people, once in a while I could really use two ovens, but it's not a frequent need. My toaster, which I love, has a convection oven feature that works well. It does great brownies, pies, and small cakes/side dishes. It fits my largest diameter (10.5 inch o.d.) pie dish easily. The rectangular inner dimensions are 12" w x 11" d, with nearly an inch bumpout in depth in the back, but I would leave that open for air flow. Anyway, what I learned this thanksgiving (I never paid attention before because I wasn't designing a kitchen) is that the turkey and the pies bake at vastly different temperatures, so I did need another oven for the holiday. But, the toaster oven fit the bill. I figured, if I could make it through thanksgiving on this setup, I could get through just about anything that might come my way. So, I am going with this combo. As the years go by and the number of bakers in my kitchen grow, I can upgrade my microwave to a convection unit if necessary too, but since I'm doing freestanding, I won't have to change my cabinets. I just wanted to mention the toaster oven, because when you're using it as an additional oven, you still get the use of your microwave. So, that's 4 baking options, 5 if you count our bread machine, all without a double wall oven. Not a solution for everyone but I thought it might be worth mentioning. If you click around in the links, some of the information about the use of solar ovens in refugee camps is heartening, and gives me hope for the future of the world. It's worth it to me, both in terms of electricity saved, and in setting an example for my kids, to master the use of the solar oven. Plus it doesn't take up any space in my kitchen or make it hotter in the summer! Here is a link that might be useful: More and more solar oven options out there...See Moresingles and semi doubles
Comments (77)Flowers, I don't know how the seeds do from those you mentioned. I do know that some roses' seeds just don't germinate well and some are very good germinators. The thing is, if you try a poor germinator for years and all of a sudden you get a seedling, it's exciting. Sometimes I just don't ever see a hip on a particular rose, and then one day there's a hip, so that's fun too. For example Louis XIV. I have had one seedling from it and this is it, named for my late dog , Jack Daniel. It makes a pretty interesting plant...good rebloom, vigor, miniature sized blooms, but is prone to blackspot. I named one Fido because Fido means " faithful" and it's a faithful bloomer. There is a beautiful story about a dog named Fido if you look want to look it up....See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
