Rose partners for Earth Angel

I'd like to put a row of roses next to my sunroom. The area is 2 x 6 ft. Currently I was thinking few Earth Angels or alternating them with some others. Some choices on hand are Bolero, Tamora, Take It Easy. Bolero would probably work because it stays small. Are they any roses that would be similar to Earth Angel in height and width?

You could look into Milwaukee's Calatrava, a Radler rose quite unlike any of his Knockout roses. White, very double, English style roses, with heavy fragrance getting about 4' tall for you in MD, makes it a strong candidate for your row. Expect 4' x 3' per bush.

Amazon frequently has it as a very moderately priced start from Stargazer Perennials. That's where I got mine.

Bolero may stay too small. Its blooms can't take rain at all, but they are super fragrant. My Bolero also came from Stargazer Perennials through Amazon. Amazon should have it back in stock soon. Call Stargazer to see when, for both MC and B, if this purchase route suits you. Figure about $20 each rose, including shipping.

Earth Angel is great, about as big as MC. Its blooms are stunning, lavishly given, intensely fragrant, and very disease resistant. Winter hardy, too. It's hard to get right now online. In spring everyone has it.

You could always alternate them with other perennials. Purples would look lovely- Salvias, nepeta and/or campanula...

I have 4 in large 20 gallon pots that i bought this spring. They didn’t get a huge number of blooms before the heat of zone 9b Houston weather really set in June. But what was worse was their damage which made leaves and buds tiny. I finally found Spinosad spray for the thrips and it has bounced back this fall and is going to have another flush of blooms. I’m going to leave mine in pots another year at least because I’m not sure of the right spot. They can’t take full south Texas sun for sure.

Mine looked like yours last year, Palytoxin. This year, it’s starting to bear resemblance to the marketing photos. The blooms look chewed up and ragged, and are pretty small. It could be the storms, thrips, or earwigs. None of my Austin’s look bad, though. Earth Angel is outside my front door. So far, it can’t hold a candle to Desdemona on the other side of the entry:

I cant say enough good things about Peach Swirl. I also love taking photos of her. She is so changeable. Her colors start out vibrant but I love when the blooms fade after a few days and slowly meld into pinks then peaches. I am not crazy about stripey roses in general but Peach Swirl and Raspberry Cream Twirl changed that lol. Maybe its the food names? Nah, they are both just extraordinary ;) The little tree frogs here adore Peach Swirl. Insects are attracted to the sweet scent and she is a perfect fluffy hiding place. More people should be growing Peach Swirl! Opening Starting to turn more pink The Melded colors ~Swirling~ Yummy Pinks Corals & Peaches Even her old faded blooms are beautiful and get fluffier & fluffier. Froggy Heaven Check out the large Peach Swirl bloom compared to this grapefruit (the faded pinkish one straight down) then there is another smaller bud just to the right that is more yellow and pink striped on the upper rt corner of the plate.

Go for it! Prune off the weak, spindly stuff and shape it how ever you like. It should take off from there.

Earth Angel is pink in bud but turns creamy white with a pink flushed center. I, personally, wouldn't grow it with a white rose like Bolero (which I love!) as I feel they would clash in this respect. With that size of space I would grow 2 Earth Angel and enjoy some annuals in between as they fill in.

How wide does Earth Angel become? 2ft at most?

I've not seen a full grown Earth Angel before, mine is first year. That said, it doesn't seem like that compact a plant (not huge, but not tiny), and it seems to want to sprawl a bit. I would think 2 EAs would do in a 2x6 space, with some annuals or perennials. But to answer your question, maybe a Margo Koster would look nice between 2 EAs? It's compact, it's also low maintenance, and I especially think the small globular flowers would work well with EA..

Thanks BenT. Margo looks like a good fit because I love globular flowers. I'll give Margo a try next spring when I order from RU or RVR.

Moses, my local nursery is having a 50% sale, so I'll give MC a try for around $18. Driving there now! (I've decided beauty > self-control. I might end up coming home with a car full.)
