Is it okay to plant knock-out roses now in OK, zone 6?
Comments (12)It's being soaked in the ground now. :) Hopefully that will be okay. Apparently the plant wasn't happy about it though because it stabbed the tar out of my right thumb as I was planting it. I pulled the thorn out and it bled a lot, but since then (about 10 hours ago) my thumb has been really sore and a little swollen, like I'm having a reaction to it. These things aren't poisonous, are they? I've heard people eat roses sometimes. But gosh, my thumb hurts! And it's been all day. I'm not a weenie. I'm just perplexed about why this hasn't gone away. A little thorn-prick should swell up and still hurt half a day later. I've been stabbed by blackberry bushes scores or hundreds of times and I just go on my way without a worry or a complication. This is different....See Morewhite knockouts on the market?
Comments (10)When we moved in two years ago, the previous owner told me the 5 white roses banking the porch were "white knockouts." I didn't know anything about them. I tried to research, and the white out roses appear single. The roses near the porch are very double. All I can think is that they are Icebergs and maybe someone told the previous owner that they were KO's meaning that they were the white answer to KO's because of their bloom reliability. I can't think what else could have happened. Of course, I am out there spraying fungicide every two weeks, because they are blackspot magnets - that's what makes me think they are Iceberg. ;)...See MoreHow do you lift rain-soaked Knockout Roses?
Comments (3)Make sure the roots weren't eaten off by voles, there by making them fall over. I found out about the pesky critters when I once leaned against a small dogwood and if fell over. It lifted out of the ground like a stake- no roots. If its not that, and just the canes bending down from the heavy weight of the rain soaked flowers, do as instructed above. You can always add some green staking to support the interior of the plant if it does not have room to sprawl. If the canes stay down like that, you will get lots of growth on all the horizontal canes at each leaf-stem junction. Again, that may or may not be a bad thing depending on how much room you have....See MoreIn Defense of Knockout
Comments (66)I moved into a home with a horrific excuse for a garden last summer. This year, I finally was able to start working on getting a new garden going, but it was already mid-summer by the time I could hire the landscaper due to money issues. When he suggested I add in a few Knock-outs to get a fast punch of color, I explained how I used to grow roses at my old house, and wasn't to fond of this idea. He told me that the Knock-outs weren't his favorite either, however, he thought that adding just a few under my ancient hydrangea tree might work and at least get me some roses for the time being since it was too late in the season for me to purchase the ones I really wanted. Surprisingly, I'm finding I really like the ones he picked out - 3 pink double Knock-Outs. They have gotten much larger than I anticipated, flower constantly, no disease; they look fantastic. I wouldn't get any more than this but I'm pleased with the ones that are there and I do think it was an excellent suggestion on his part for my current needs. I will, however, be ordering "regular" roses this season to plant for next spring :D...See Morejaviwa
