Father's Day Favorites Anyone?

Are you preparing anything special for a Father today? Whether it be your Dad, Hubby, Son or anyone who is a Dad? I'm making Italian Steak Sandwiches for Hubby and Son and family. Also pasta salad and homemade apple cake.

Visited my dear husband in his nursing home and, as usual, brought some of his favorites. He is on a pureed diet which he hates so I bring a little something on each visit. Today he did not know me (nor much of anything else) but could eat. He polished off a handful of Cheezits, some cheddar and salami cheese cubes, a peppermint patty, and a small bottle of chocolate milk. It gave me a great deal of pleasure to see his chocolatey smile after a swig of the milk.

I'm not a fan of steak but DH loves it so tonight I'm grilling a Fred Flintstone size Rib Eye, grilled mushrooms, baked potato, fresh Ontario asparagus, and his favourite .... Strawberry Shortcake made with homemade scones.

I'm having a Cobb salad

Love your picture of Poppy. My grandfather on my dad's side was locally know as Grandpa Billy Goat because he would huff & puff a lot but we all knew it was all for show. Underneath he was a big ball of mush. And the quote is one of those universal truths. I think we can all relate to how our parents miraculously became smarter as we got older.

Great pictures! I have Red Volunteer, new this year. I have been astounded at the phenomenal growth. It is the largest plant of all the new ones we planted last fall. It has multiplied like fury and bloomed over a long period of time. It's the first daylily I see when I walk outside in the morning. I had read a lot of comments about it here at the forum. Even though it is a dormant, I think it will do fine down here in the sunny south. It did not fade and even though red, the thrips have avoided it completely. I wish I had bought it years ago. It rapidly became one of my favorites. Orange Velvet is truly a beautiful bloom. We lost the mature plant from crown rot this year (like so many others), but the newer one is doing fine. It will just take time for it to reach the size of the other one. Elegant Candy performed well, too, with a long season of blooms. Nancy

Well I was going to have a pot roast and a new recipe, a Banana Cream Pie from a site I just found last night. It looks fabulous. BUUUTTT, as I just started heating the oven to stick the roast in, and was crunching the graham crackers for the pie, I heard a loud POP noise, and looked at the oven and saw it glowing red and sparks flying on the inside. Opened it up, and my element at the bottom of my oven was bright red and sparking, ready to catch fire. So we grilled out and had BBQ chicken, macaroni salad, garden salad, and green beans. You mean some fathers get cooked for?! Oh yeah, forgot about my FIL... he'll be cooked for. I've been up since 5 cleaning for their visit!

Just doing Eggs Benedict for brunch. Diet starts tomorrow. Again.

Visited the fish monger today for fresh shrimp. Made remoulade this morning. Boiling the shrimp in a bit. Trader Joe's sweet potato fries.

Picked up blueberries at the farmers' market yesterday and was going to make zabaglione today, but never got around to it. There's a baby watermelon in the garden shed fridge if we want dessert.

Chase, is that all you're having?

I only eat filet mignon or flank. Few times a year is enough for me. I'll eat burgers more often, but only in the summer when I have garden fresh tomatoes. It's been a good harvest this year, so a lot of burger eating going on. ;)

I made a Fathers' Day brunch this at about noon. Main dishes were a lump crabmeat, asparagus, leek and Brie frittata and a black bean salad with avocado and tomato. Not pictured were French rolls and a blueberry- orange coffee cake.

Yes, I cooked for Elery and for my son in law, Dave. My other SIL, Kevin, had to work.

We had Dave and the kids over for breakfast and I made his favorite, blueberry muffins, as well as pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage AND bacon.

Dinner was barbecued ribs, baked beans, garlic rolls, roasted potatoes, sauteed corn. I made a gluten free chocolate pie with the pudding type filling from scratch, and a southern strawberry cobbler for Elery with fresh local strawberries, which were beautiful and sweet, almost a shame to cook them, but it's one of his favorites and we only get really good local berries once a year.
