Do oleanders survive winter in zone 7-NE MS?
Comments (20)You are right, it is an awfully tight spot. I am not sure why it was planted there except maybe they thought it would be "bushy" on top and stay bushy under the roof edge. It is not my favorite location. I do not know how long it has been there but I know it has been at least 5 years since I moved in and it was there then. The roots of the shrubbery in general are just knots so i doubt it would transplant well if I was able to "cut" it out of that location. That green tie is a rubbery plastic tie that keeps the top heavy shrub from almost laying down on top of the hollies below....See MoreIs this guy going to survive winter in Pittsburgh 6b? );
Comments (6)Take a 2-3 gallon (a 5 gallon would be better), black nursery pot and cut the bottom all around leaving 2" uncut. This is your hinge that will keep the pot's bottom attached. No later than Thanksgiving time, place it over your James Gallway filling it with oak leaves, no other kind of leaf, or with medium or small pine bark mulch. Fill the pot to the top and place a brick over it on top of the attached lid. Take the pot off in early April, but leave the leaves/mulch in place, removing them little by little over the next weeks. By the time the forsythia and early daffodils are blooming the new growth should be showing an inch or so. Most of the mulch should be removed by this time. If there is a frost cover your James Gallway and remove the pot after the frost is over. I garden in Pittsburgh, and know the drill concerning roses around here. Although the Dept. of Ag. lists us as zone 6b, we are not. The weather is so changeable here with northern blasts, followed by southern fronts and an occasional Nor'easter, we range considerably over winter between 5a to 6b. Think 5/6 and rose garden accordingly. You'll be glad you did. You gotta do something about the deer, they will torture you and confound all your rose gardening....See MoreCreeping Jenny survives winter freeze and blooms PICS!
Comments (11)Thanks Anne. I'm not sure what the purple annual in the one basket is called, but the other purple annual is a heliotrope. There's also hot pink single and double million bells (calibrachoa). The only greenery I put with them is the creeping jenny, which surprised me with lovely yellow blooms mid season....See Moredoes rust survive winter?
Comments (1)Spores will survive just about any natural environmental condition. What you want to do, is practice good hygiene by removing material from which spores are likely to be released once growth resumes in the spring. Removal of old infected leaves is highly recommended as it moves the inoculant source further away from the host. Doesn't mean re-infection won't occur from other further away sources but at least you're making the spores work for it....See More- 6 years ago
