Creeping Jenny survives winter freeze and blooms PICS!

Yes, you read that right!! After last year's killing frost in the fall, I dumped my hanging baskets in a vacant area of my back garden. Well, this past spring, I noticed a sprout in that soil pile. After a closer look, I noticed that those sprouts were actually several sprouts of my Creeping Jenny from last year's baskets that survived Ontario's frigid winter temps and snow! I was so shocked. So by the time I was making my hanging baskets at the end of May, the Creeping Jenny had grown about 4-5 inches long in this soil pile. So I broke the pieces apart and planted them in my baskets. Now in July they are actually blooming these pretty yellow flowers ! I have never seen Creeping Jenny bloom before. Is this normal? I guess 2 year old Creeping Jenny blooms? Going to try the same thing this winter. Sharing some pics ...

Comments (16)Thanks for the compliments all. I am surprised these are doing as well as they are considering the weather conditions. "Juneuary" that is too funny BorS. Wish I was having to use a heater down here in the blast furnace of the south! Helen the garden flowers look great, but the grass is already scorched looking. Sure am glad I didn't bother reseeding after last summer's drought because that would have been a bust! I did aerate it this spring and through out some white clover seed which started coming up but not sure if it will make it this year or not. No black flies here, just mosquitoes although I honestly don't know where they are breeding. I dump the water in the bird bath out every other day and the fish in the pond do a good job of eating the larva since I don't feed them at all anymore. Jean, you know I love Tie Dye. It's coloration is just so wild looking. Comments (7)Lovely Nell, I saw some of these photos on your blog today :) I have had some tip burn on some of the "not yet planted" camellias I bought. I hope they are OK. I'm so glad they were NOT planted, the area due for planting ended up being part of the vastly running (rushing) waterway in the backyard last week with the 3rd incredible rain in the last 6 months. I have some little tommy crocus peeking out, but all the pansies I planted a few months ago are far worse for wear. It's rather sad out there, I'm afraid. Superbrown!!! You are fairing much better. Comments (21)I'm in 6b in the mid-Hudson Valley, so not too different from NoNJ. As to rosemary -- don't know what variety, was started from supermarket cuttings in water -- I have never kept it outdoors over winter. I have them in pots in a very sunny location. Come fall (like TODAY!) I repot them in clean mix after washing off the roots and take them indoors, sunny window. Mist them once in a while, too, besides water when needed. They like that. As to sage, I have a six year old plant originally grown from seed (don't recall what variety either) and they have survived in the ground with no special covering even given last winter's amazing snow depth. Come Spring, I prune any bad stuff off fairly aggressively and they always spring back. That mother plant is almost a shrub at this point....See MoreWould my macrophyllas survive this severe winter?
Comments (13)It seems like all regulars suffering from the winter blues syndrome and wants to vent....:-) Let me chime in as well. It looks like we have an abnormaly cold winter this year, but I think we all were simply spoiled by previous abnormaly warm winters and forgot how to define our zones. In my case (z6b) it's 0 to -5F and we had only two nights (so far) down to -2, while the vast majority of 'cold' nights was in low single digits and day temps rarely broke down below 10F. So, technicaly this winter still fits in 6b definition and so far I have no reason to worry about upcoming summer blooms. Yes, I know that H.aspera villosa and Little Honey most likely will not bloom, but rest should be OK. As far as my experience tells me, bread-and-butter macs and most of serratas could take -5/7F (-20C) for a short period of time if they are completely dormant and not in a wind exposed locations. Freeze-and-thaw (actualy in reverse order, thaw-and-freeze) cycles in spring are a major killer of flower buds that start breaking dormancy. Therefore, while living all my hydrangeas unprotected for a whole winter I use some burlap wraping in spring if forecast says that below 0 is coming....See MorePatti (z6a ON Canada)

5 years agoHere is a Creeping Jenny in one of my flower beds. No problem with surviving long and cold winters in my zone 5a. Pic taken in July 2017.
Far from invasive, although it likes to overflow the borders of the bed.
