about grocery store baggers
Comments (31)Exactly. I have watched cashiers reach down the belt to grab something in a box - or worse, dish washing detergent - to put with my cold stuff, which I put on the belt first. I have tried the opposite approach - so they reach for a cold item to put with something packaged. Drives me nuts. And I have so many bags - cooler bags, regular bags - and ice packs in the car to put with the cold stuff - that I no longer have room in my trunk. Most of the cashiers where I shop know that I intend to pack my own groceries - or will ask them to keep the cold stuff, produce etc. together. I am hardly unique - people behind me in the line behind me get very frustrated as they are doing the same as I am - and some people just move to a different cashier. And if anyone has ever had a bottle of dish soap open when placed with food you will understand the horror of it all. Just the other day I asked a young cashier about to bag my dishwashing soap with produce to go home and tell her mother she was going to put regular dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher and clothes washer and wait for her mom's reaction. I always tie a plastic bag around things with tops such as are on dishwashing liquid....See MoreOn line grocery coupons???

Comments (117)Anecdotes are not necessarily trends nor do they necessarily represent the aggregate of the data. Anecdotally, I never had a pro or con view of unions and I tended to view them negatively growing up. I'm old enough to have worked in quite a few union and non-union places. What I have observed is folks in union places work harder than non-union, as they are treated and act more professionally. But that's just my small life and data-set, no more true or relevant than anyone else's, otherwise known as having an official value of .02. And one need not need have a degree to be a smart or logical person. Plus, DePaul University is a fine institution, IMHO, and one does receive a liberal education in college, which should make one a good parser of information. He cites references better than some of my students. I'm not saying it's a good or bad defense of shopping habits and the ethics of Walmart, but neither is the defense that a cinema degree from DePaul University means your article isn't "good." If you check the usual suspect rating scores, DePaul is in the middle, but even that does not show the whole story, as there are many inherent biases in college rankings. I personally would prefer the musings of a hard working kid from the streets who worked his way through a mid range university with grit and determination over a "gentleman's C" student from Yale any day!...See MoreTwo lessons at the grocery store today
Comments (7)Thanks, ritaweeda, my comment was tongue in cheek overdrive, but while generally not a germ-a-phobe, I truly dislike being sick with a cold or flu. As a nice favor to friends, I used to babysit their young kiddies for free when they had to go for a daylong class, or the daycare was closed. Too often. I sometimes had four colds a season. I no longer spend time with kids, but the advantage is, I don’t tend to catch colds, except last year, when shopping, a woman with whom I was speaking (no contact and I was 3-4 feet away) turned her head to cough, the informed me she’d been battling a bad cold. Gee, thanks. After about 2 to three days My throat began to itch and feel sore, the next day fatigue, sore throat, rhinitis. Grrr. And, definitely yes yes, it was that woman’s cold. I was sick for three weeks. And I had a lot of work to do. Bah! I’m afraid I would be a grumpy toad if I had been in that sneezy cough waiting room. “Look here, you imbeciles!” Ever go into the lav of one of those big store and see the many messy toilets? Flushing and tidying up seems beyond some users. :-/ Not everyone is going to score over 90 on an IQ test, or be able to follow the directions for making a peanut butter sandwich. I use Alcohol-based hand cleaner, avoid public knobs and handles, and avoid the cold air blow-dryer at Lowe’s, MacDonald’s and some other public places. They just push atomized cold bathroom air onto one’s clean hands. Blech. Best, Grumpy...See MoreLucyStar1
