How long do you wait to try to identify a caterpillar?

A while ago I asked about an identification for caterpillars on my oak. Miss Sherry correctly identified them as pink striped oakworms, even though they didn't look like it at that time (they did eventually) this time of the year, there is something I don't know almost every day. I really don't want to bother you every time, but often the website mentioned here a few threads down, my caterpillar book or google don't give me any answers. Are you patient and wait for them to get distinct features in hopes they don't disappear before you figure it out? As an example the only close match for these was in "caterpillars of Singapore"
