Revised Beach House Plan for Review--please critique
Comments (7)My inlaws' pool/golf house in Florida has four bedrooms + an upstairs office they use as a bedroom and I just don't think it has it has much more common living space than this. When there's a real houseful everyone's at the beach, in the lanai, on the golf course, or happy to hang out en famille. The living room has a big sectional and two recliners. It's rare everyone would be watching tv at the same time. The kids are often in their room on their iPods if they're not in the pool or playing games at the table. In your house they'd use the upstairs den. There's no separate rec room (that's the lanai). Since my inlaws bought it primarily for themselves, it has a large master suite with big bathroom and WIC. Seems sensible to me as they are down there six months a year compared to my one. The one thing they do have is a den on the main floor for an adult away room...it can be used as a bedroom if need be but is set up as a grown up room 90% of the time. My FIL uses it as his office and his fave tv is in there. This post was edited by robotropolis on Mon, Nov 3, 14 at 22:23...See MoreHelp revising kitchen layout in new Build
Comments (8)My thoughts from my own standpoint, so you can take or leave, as will work for you: I would put the pots and pans drawers to the left of the main sink. I would put the 18" trash on the end of the island closest the stove and across from the sink. My opinion about the rest of your island depends on what you want the 18" cab with drawer for. I had some cabinets with drawers in our island, but I had them changed to drawers. I also think a 2-drawer bank will make the drawers VERY deep. I have drawer banks with a standard, shallower top drawer and 2 drawers under that, and they're nicely deep. As far as uppers and design.... It matters most about how they look around the window, because that's what you'll see most easily. If you have cabinets to each side of the window, the spacing between them and the window should match, one side to the other. If you decide to run the stove wall cabinets straight to the window wall, instead of wrapping around, you have more flexibility in how you size the cabinet on the right. You could even have a hutch type of thing, like I do. You could actually have a hutch in either case, if you wanted. I can't tell what you're planning, but also think that it's important to leave nice wall space between the window trim and the upper cabinets, to let the window and trim stand out and not be crowded. But I know others like to run cabs up to the trim....See MoreRevised kitchen layout!
Comments (2)Shivy, I was surprised to see a layout EXTREMELY similar to our previous house, pillars (support) and all. Difference was our cooktop was on the island and wall oven on the right end of the sink run. It's not the aesthetics that were bad but the functioning of the kitchen. Hollysprings had said to you the distance from the frig to the island is too much and she is very right! It worked better (not great) for us because we had our cooktop on the island. You have to go several steps from frig to island, prep, and then over to your cooktop. With the distance, I think it would be a nuisance almost to use the island, except for banquet etc. I think the prep sink is a patch for bigger problems. I'm not a design expert but I'd continue on, perhaps responding even to your old thread. I think you still have some "homework" to do on the design....See Morerevised kitchen layout
Comments (17)Re: 48" aisle on sink run...the sink, in Marybeth1's OP is pulled out what looks like 6" so the aisle is really only 42" in front of the sink. Yes, I know about the traffic issue. B/c of the overall layout of her house though, I'm not sure there's much that can be done if she switches from the current peninsula (which does direct traffic away from the work areas) to an island. People being what they are will always go for the perceived shortest route. The main reason I showed the traffic was to demonstrate that the area b/w the Kitchen & FR really isn't a much used traffic area and you could put a table there or extend the island into it w/o an impact on traffic flow. B/c of the traffic issue to the bedrooms, I think the aisles will all need to be at least 42"....See Morecpartist
