On a travel site I frequent, the only people traveling to see the eclipse are those that made hotel, motel, campsite, relatives' homes, other reservations over a year ago. If you didn't, you're out of luck.

Too far north here, however that is the same time of the annual Perseid's Meteor shower.

I8 years ago, DH & I saw it for the first time on our wedding night in the dark Las Vegas Desert. Ever since, it's been our tradition to watch it annually on our anniversary. :c)

jrb, I posted THIS comment about it a few days ago; there just doesn't seem to be much interest in it within the group here, much to my surprise.

I won't have to travel far to be a witness, luckily, but it would be a good excuse for a road trip!

"spine tingling experience", Well that would be hard to pass up. I'm about a 5 hour drive from the total eclipse zone. There seems to be a premium cost for accommodations within a 100 mile radius. I mean, where else do you see Motel 8 rooms for $205 a night. I looking at driving up and spending the night about 150 miles away and driving in the next day.

I'm in Hailey, ID therefore right smack dab in the middle of the path!

schoolhouse, be careful about spreading exaggerations. The first three towns I checked today on Expedia (in different states) listed on the website jrb linked, in the center of the path, all had many choices of hotel rooms to book.

As between having time and having interest to go see this, some have just one, some have both, some have neither. I'm not sure how many will want or be able to travel to see a mid-week attraction.

We were at the eclipse in 1970 - a bunch of astronomy grad students drove down for it- it was an amazing experience - quite short time of totality but still so memorable.

I have already planned a party for that day and I have 24 pairs of special solar eclipse glasses on the ready. I am so excited for this and we are less than 100 miles from what they are saying is the absolute best place to view this in Kentucky. I am having a party and I have invited people but they seem more excited about a party than they do the eclipse. I have told them that this is a historic event and quite possibly the last one I will see in my life. The small town in Kentucky is really gearing up for this thing and so am I. It is also the day after my birthday. I'm in. I already scheduled my day off work like 3 months ago.

I know that I sound like a crazy person. YOLO!!!

We are in the path (100% blockage!) and we have it on our calendars.
