Comments (7)Getting caught up, since I was gone for about a week. This saddleback caterpillar will deliver a painful sting if you happen to bump up against it. A tree guy working in my yard found it with his elbow. I had been stung on the back of the neck a week earlier by a different species of stinging caterpillar, and looked after the tree guy got stung, and found this one. Comments (16)This is a mural of a train painted on the wall around the corner from a well known restaurant I frequent: Whistlestop Cafe/Irondale Cafe. Not my picture, but I did have one of Nita when her family came to visit me, ever so long ago. It's very rare that you eat there without hearing and seeing trains pass by across the street from the cafe. People with kids and grandkids go across the across the street and sit on the benches just to watch the trains go by. Comments (18)Amelanchier has many names, depending where you live. Here in PA most people know it as shadblow serviceberry or just shadblow. I did make a pie from the berries the first year that the trees bore. Apparently it took the birds awhile to realize how good they were. My reason for planting the 6 trees in the first place was for the birds, so I let them have all they want. The berries are very seedy, more so than elderberries, so making jam or jelly would mean more work than I want to do. Littlemonkey, that jam recipe does sound good though. Mine are shrubby trees that sucker profusely. Dh keeps after the suckers to keep them from taking over the yard. Here are 3 of them in bloom in mid April. 9 years agoThe one smiling is mine. He's always smiling, nothing special going on with the curly haired girl. Even though she's a sweetie. Marching band kickoff camp. They're done until July 17th.
