Amelanchier berries. The robins are in a feeding frenzy. These can make a decent pie, or so I hear.

gazania - I'll admit I had to look those up, first time hearing Amelanchier berries. I learned they are what we call Saskatoon berries here. If you did decide to harvest them, they supposedly make excellent jam and are high in antioxidants.

Rose 'Orange Ruffels,' an old hybrid tea (1952) by Brownell. A kind gardener in Texas sent me a small started cutting of this plant years ago. I like orange/apricot colored roses.

My latest hooking project in process: a Chinese Water Dragon for my granddaughter.

We call Amelanchier wild pear or chuckley pear here. As kids we'd pick them and eat them, but I've heard of people making jam from them.

That is one gorgeous rose. I imagine that there is a wonderful fragrance.

"Espresso" gladiolus. It is suppose to be very dark red, almost black red. Mine are a bright red.

Amelanchier has many names, depending where you live. Here in PA most people know it as shadblow serviceberry or just shadblow. I did make a pie from the berries the first year that the trees bore. Apparently it took the birds awhile to realize how good they were. My reason for planting the 6 trees in the first place was for the birds, so I let them have all they want.

The berries are very seedy, more so than elderberries, so making jam or jelly would mean more work than I want to do. Littlemonkey, that jam recipe does sound good though.

Mine are shrubby trees that sucker profusely. Dh keeps after the suckers to keep them from taking over the yard. Here are 3 of them in bloom in mid April. They like moisture and are planted here with a River Birch.

This is one of my daylillies. It opened today. It's the first bloom off this plant. It's been in the ground 2 yrs.

Jim, the rose is fragrant but it is usually so short (winter takes it almost to the ground) that I don't often stoop to smell it!

Saskatoon berries are found in Saskatchewan ... including Saskatoon, where I spent 6 years in univ. and seminary, just over 60 years ago.
I thought that the Amelia... ones looked a bit like Saskatoons ... but the Saskatoons don't have more seeds than do the elderberries.

Sakatoons make great pie, as well.
