Adenium Obesum (Desert Rose) -- is it having a problem?
Comments (21)Hi, Ive also been having some trouble out of my Adenium Obesum. But as I am looking through some of the suggested caused and cures. I am finding it a little hard to compare since there are a few differences. I purchased my Adenium Obesum about a month ago online. It arrive healthy, about 2.5-3" tall green and healthy. She was obviously grown from seed since she has the infamous fat trunk. I done a little research before purchasing the plant. I got to know it like dry arid conditions, fast draining soil, and PLENTY of sun light. I also read you could train Adenium Obesum to become indoor tolerant. My potting medium is bonsai potting mix, and sand; no course or dead plant material as it is highly susceptible to root rot. Since it has arrive I placed the plant in indirect sunlight but still pretty bright. After about a week or so I noticed a bit of yellowing in a few of the leaves. Come 2 days later it has spread to a few more, a few days later the first yellowing leaves begin to wilt. Then fall off. You get the idea. So now its a month later and I have a most of the original leaves, but a few have fallen off and most haven either yellowed or becoming yellow. I know my water is draining fast, the only thing I can think is light, or the water I am currently using (tap) is not kosher with my Adenium Obesum. Please help, I want to see my little girl thrive. I know Adenium Obesum are such BEAUTIFUL trees, which is why I purchased it to begin with. The situation isnt too dire, but until I get some help I have her placed outside my window in direct sunlight most of the day. Btw I am watering her about once-twice a week. Im still figuring out what she likes as far as water. Remember this is a baby not some of the beauts you guys have posted. Thanks once again, Stefan...See MoreAdenium Obesum Leaf Issue
Comments (5)Hi Christopher!!! Your Adenium is looking pretty good for this time of the year. Most of mine have lost most of their leaves and i have reduced the water. Mine are in the sunroom and have a few leaves and are starting to bud now. I also have some under my T-5 lights that dont look as good as yours. I just received some from R from Taiwan and they came barerooted a few months ago. All are budding now and are starting to take off. check for spider mites. If you don't see any, then i wouldn't worry to much. They will drop their leaves more so than normal this time of the year. Some varieties lose more than others. Have you cut back on the amount of water during the winter? Glad to see you here at the Adenium forum.. lots of great people here and great info too! ;-) I think you are doing a great job growing this baby from seed. You DR is looking great and compared to most of ours that are dropping leaves because of some of them going somewhat dormant, you are doing great! No worries! I'm sure yours is in a good draining mix? Your Adenium is looking pretty good to me!! I'm sure you will have others chime in and help you with your questions! Comments (3)caveat: not an adenium expert. I was eagerly awaiting to hear what people thought because I have the same problem with one of my adenium. I have one that is larger, which is the problem, which is on a table directly in front of my office window. I have two seedlings and one smaller plant that are on the same window's sill. the big one is in the best draining mix, with some slow release fertilizer added and is the only one that has lost all it's leaves. There are some small one's sprouting however. there was a period in late winter during which we had a stretch of warmer weather. that combined with the fact that the heating in the office was still on pumped the temp up to about 80 in my office for a few weeks on end. During that time, the plant really grew. now, the temp is back in the low 70's and it dropped its leaves. I'm assuming it's going into partial dormancy. I'm guessing that the heat the other plants get from being 3-5 inches closer to the sun is keeping the smaller plants 'awake.' Could it be that larger plants are more sensitive, for some reason? At any rate, I'm just feeling my way along in the dark. I haven't watered the plant in a week or two, as I'm afraid to kill it if it's definitely dormant. I will water it today though, because the trunk is getting a little springy and there IS some new growth. Not sure this was helpful to the OP, but it sure was cathartic for me! :)...See MoreAdenium Obesum planting media
