Hundreds of new member's went to MPG Forum and were very comfortable selling and promoting their products and services, agendas and selling right under Jennifers nose and she was allowing it to happen believing, good will would prevail. There is a problem with copyrights and that is that there are no copyright police. You may own the rights to your images or text but keeping track of who's using it and bringing them to justice is all up to you. You can't call the cops and point to the crime and expect them to pursue it. Even if you have a lawyer involved, the thief gets to keep using your copyrighted material and making money off of it until they get the cease and desist letter from your lawyer. You get to take them to court AFTER they continue to use it from that point. If they aren't making a ton of money off your images your lawyer will tell you give it up and hope they clean up their act after recieving a legal sounding letter. You might even be in a situation where you do take them to court and you could win a judgement against them, but if they simply don't pay it you have to take them to court again to force them to pay up. It is all a big mess that really only works out well for people that find their work being used illegaly by businesses that make lots of money. So basically all you get to do is huff and puff and the other party may choose to ignore your threats - I've seen it happen before. Some creative solutions is to only use low resolution images on the web (so that when they steal it they are restricted as to its size, thereby limiting its use); and you can place a clear box over all your images so that when they try to cut and paste they only capture a clear box and not the image underneath it.

I was also a realtor - the only reason we held an open house was to find out which neighbors were coming through and thinking about selling and to see if we could find a home for a prospective buyer - rarely the home you were showing. Back in the day we held broker opens the first Tuesday after we listed a property. This allowed us to show the home to all of the local area brokers and their agents. We wanted the local agents to know we had an available home and as an agent you wanted to know what was on the market in your local area so you drove from house to house all day every Tuesday to keep informed about your market. Where I live there are no more broker opens and the agents don't seem to know much about any of the properties except for the ones they listed or the ones a buyer has expressed interest in seeing. Most sellers, even if they have not completely moved out, should have most of their valuables out of the home, stored in a locked closet or in a safe, not sitting around for people to steal. We did our best to keep an eye on the potential buyers when we held an open house, but it was simply my best, I couldn't be talking to a potential buyer and keeping an eye on someone else walking through the house. I also asked sellers to make sure they didn't leave valuables sitting around that would tempt dishonest people. The same thing could happen when doing a private showing. The husband may want to look at the garage while the wife is looking in the kitchen. I couldn't be in two places at once, so one person may be unattended. During a private showing, even back in the day, we set the appointment and had the potential buyers information, so if something had gone missing, you had a pretty good idea of who took it. The lockboxes at that time were not as secure as they are today - most were supplied through the local Board of Realtors and had a key that opened the box. Anyone who was a licensed realtor could get a key that opened every lockbox. Some realtors had private lock boxes that were opened with a code, but the code was usually in the listing, so every realtor still had access to the house. I remember a time when we had some unscrupulous people who would look for vacant homes with a lockbox. They would advertise the house for rent on Craigslist or some small local publication, bring people in and collect a cash rental application fee and deposit, first and last month rent and give the key to the "Renter". I knew of several homes that were rented to unsuspecting renters - their money is gone, listing agent is surprised by a family moving into the house when it is still for sale. There is no limit to the ingenuity of scam artists and thieves. Sadly, if you are not a criminal, you may never think like a criminal, which makes you vulnerable.

I don't know where you live that the police wouldn't do anything but they come out where I live for a lot less. Some kids had asked an elderly neighbor if they could do odd jobs for her... another neighbor was suspicious of them and called the police. The police checked it out and it turned out 2 of the kids had police records... one convicted of a sex crime. Don't kid yourself, police want to know what is going on. Plus, thefts like this are a reason companies are bonded. You really should be able to get your money back even if you are not sure of the exact amount. Bottom line, this isn't your niece or your child's friend. This is a company that stole from you. You may think telling the owner is enough, but it may not be. The owner, although you may think you know him, may not care and may even be a part of it.
