Has anyone else been in your house since you noticed the bank? At all?

I should clarify - anyone in the house since you last noticed/paid attention to the level of money in the bank?

I would talk to the owner and tell him that the money is missing. Tell him that you do not know who took it but his men were the only ones in the house or one of a few in the house and that you felt he should be aware of the possibility that he might........key word here........might have a thief working for him.

If you know him and like him that well, talking to him shouldn't be a problem.

If you are ABSOLUTELY sure that no one else could have taken the money, I would definitely tell him. I would let him know that I will continue to use his services, but the people that came to your house will not be returning. That way, if anyone else complains in the future there will be a complaint trail.

How noisy is carpet cleaning? I have a bissel and do my own, and it's as loud (or maybe a little louder) than a vacuum. Just wondering how the thief could access the bank without jingling a lot of coins.

The only other person who has been in our house since I was in the bank was DH's physical therapist, who was here yesterday morning. She never left DH's sight, plus the whole time she was here, I was sitting at the computer--next to the bank.

One of the carpet cleaners picked up the bank and put it in the adjoining bathroom, on the counter. DH and I were at the opposite end of the house, so we would not have heard anything.

The only other people who have been in the house are DH and the Yorkie.

Yes, I would report it to the owner of the carpet company business. While you can't prove who actually did the stealing, it will give him the heads up to watch the fellows carefully. His company's reputation is on the line. You will be doing him a favour in the long run.

Wanda, I would absolutely tell the owner but I would do so telling him that you want to make him aware of a possible problem, not accusing anyone. As a warning to keep his eyes open and that, as Heather states, his company's reputation is on the line.

I just hate that things like this happen and am sorry that it happened to you.

First, I would put a piece of tape on the jar at the level you remember it being. Then another at the current level. Then I would count the leftover change and do the math and get a more accurate estimate of what is missing. THEN I would call the owner. You might be surprised at how fast those coins add up.

I would also file a police report and ask them if they want to check that jar for fingerprints. You already know one guy touched it, but if both their prints are on it, it might force a confession. And if it was wiped clean, that's kind of telling, too.

WHENEVER someone comes over, I make sure my purse and valuables are nowhere to be seen. We recently had a visit from a teenage thief, her dad had told us of her issues and I had told him to never bring her over. DH, on the other hand, is too nice and overruled me. I had an hours notice and I stashed and locked up and hid things to make it hard for her to rip me off. I also took some photos. After all that, she stayed out on the verandah the whole time because I think her dad threatened her and gave her fair warning. :) She is now at at a juvie boot camp and doing very well, I'm glad to say. But I won't ever trust her in my house. :)

Yes, you should double check the amount, call the owner, have him come to the house and discuss it with him. If he refuses to do anything then make a police report such as missing money etc. No matter how much we can 'trust" people for various reasons some people seem to feel what is out in the open is theirs. Maybe someone is having financial difficulties and they have done it to others they have worked for.

We had two similar incidents, but here prescription drugs were involved. Once it was a mover who was packing us up to move from our former house. We notified the company. Once it was a tech who was in this house to do annual inspection of our furnace. We notified the company owner. Neither man took ALL the pills; each took 'some'. Now if I have anything on hand that has any opiate ingredients, I hide it before anyone enters the house.

I'd have to tell the owner, too. Also, look around and make sure nothing else is gone.

Either someone stole something or they didn't. If you think someone did, you should get a police report and have it investigated. If you truly think it was this service, why would you want them back? I mean I could understand you only hire them with the condition that only the owner come...but are you saying you would invite these same people back into your home next time?

Call the police. Let them handle. They can decide how to proceed and who and how to notify. They may have even have additional information pertinent to helping solve your case. Maybe there's a kid gang going around climbing through windows stealing coins... Who knows? But, I would be less scared of a criminal if they know the police are involved. The owner may even have a rough time firing someone based only on your hunch; I'm not even sure I would believe your 'the coins were higher in the bank' assumption. You really should have the police investigate if you are certain some were stolen.

Yeah, well, good luck. It comes down to your word against theirs. When a neighbor stole Hubs pain pills from our Apt ( Vicodan...a narcotic.) Nothing was ever done. I called the police and when he came out, I said she did and she said she didn't. End of story.

Something else to consider. If indeed it was these workers that took the money, I would get those funds and any other that you might have around deposited in the bank.

And I definitely would double check my doors & windows to be sure they're locked.

The police won't do anything for you. You can only say that an undetermined amount was stolen. In most communities, with all the fiscal cutbacks, the cops won't even come out for such a vague charge.

Better to just call the carpet-cleaning company's owner and give him a heads up.

I don't know where you live that the police wouldn't do anything but they come out where I live for a lot less. Some kids had asked an elderly neighbor if they could do odd jobs for her... another neighbor was suspicious of them and called the police. The police checked it out and it turned out 2 of the kids had police records... one convicted of a sex crime. Don't kid yourself, police want to know what is going on.

Plus, thefts like this are a reason companies are bonded. You really should be able to get your money back even if you are not sure of the exact amount.

Bottom line, this isn't your niece or your child's friend. This is a company that stole from you. You may think telling the owner is enough, but it may not be. The owner, although you may think you know him, may not care and may even be a part of it.

Is there any way, that by moving the bank of coins, that it may have settled, making it look like there is less? I only ask because of the bank has a shape, coins could have filled an area that they weren't before and make the level look lower.

If you are sure, I would definitely tell the owner.

I'd go and talk to the owner, along the lines that Ruthie suggested ... and I'd do it face to face, with just the two of us on hand.

Years ago my friend's teenage son had a friend in their basement to play video games. Several days later, my friend noticed some electronic gadgets missing. Called the police, told them. Turned out her friend's son was the thief. When he was visiting, he unlocked a door in the basemen that led outside. Then he just waited till the house was empty, let himself in and took stuff. He got caught, my friend did not get her stuff back. He'd already sold or given everything away.

You steal my stuff ... and have sold it, or given it away, either you pay for it ... or you weed my garden/cut my grass.

In a community - they ain't no free lunch: not of that kind, anyway. Especially for young folks, who need to learn how to act.
