I'd like to know what this woody-stemmed plant is

It just started growing along the fence in the back yard. There are no other plants that look like this nearby. It has long, narrow, shiny, leathery leaves. Last year it got to be about 3 feet tall and the trunk near the ground was about 1/2" diameter. If I remember right, the trunk was brownish and shiny. When I had some yard work done last autumn, I told the men not to cut it down when they were weed whacking. However, they did flay the bark off the trunk at ground level. I waited until this spring to see if it survived. The old trunk was dead, so I cut it back to about 3 inches. Now it has sent out several new shoots which as yet are herbaceous and not woody. One person told me it might be a cherry seedling. Another suggested it was a plum. I wanted to get another opinion from someone that likely actually knows. Thanks.
