It is one of the wild cherries, most likely Prunus serotina. Based on my experience, most likely planted by a small rodent stashing it for later.

Thanks, Babs. There are gray squirrels and chipmunks around. They could have obtained a seed for someone's garbage. As you can see, I have mostly maples, so this different looking plant caught my eye.

Spellcheck has turned serotina into serotonin! This is a wild cherry, not an edible one, so the seed would likely have come from surrounding trees, rather than human garbage.

Debodun, as floral mentioned, this is a native wild tree, not like the grocery store cherries. It is a bit messy as a tree if it overhangs a patio, driveway, or gutters since it produces a substantial amount of cherries, and you will find lots of volunteers courtesy of the critters. In addition to the rodents, the birds like the fruit which is mostly pit and far too sour for me to find it edible. I do enjoy the spring flowers which are just finishing up here and like watching the birds enjoying the fruit in late summer. It's a tree I like having on this old farm where we have a lot of space, but I am not entirely certain I would keep it in a suburban yard.
