Closet Sliding Doors

Hello!

I live in an apartment. Two bedrooms and the living room have closets with sliding doors. One of the bedrooms has a three-door version with one of the doors on its own track beyond the two interior ones. I find it extremely frustrating to be trying to pick out clothes and having to keep sliding the doors back and forth to see into the closet. Plus, the three door closet has two doors on the same track that I am always banging together accidentally, which doesn't make the people on the other side of the wall happy...

Though I'm renting, I am allowed to make changes to the apartment given that my changes raise the value of the apartment, which I believe finding an alternative to these doors would do. I will be compensated as long as it isn't over-the-top expensive.

Doors that swing out could probably work for the double-door closets. But what about the three-door closet? Have any of you encountered this before?

You could use accordion-style doors. How wide is the opening?

The three-door closet is about 7' wide.

We did paint our walk in master closet a lighter shade of gold then what is in our master bedroom. There's lots of light in the closet and the closet is large enough that it doesn't look small, just looks bright and clean. We weren't planning on moving when we painted it, and it will probably stay the same color when we list. We haven't painted the other closets, they're all builders white. I think when we go to sell the house this spring, we'll paint all the empty closets a fresh white just because with nothing in them you can see any and all scuff marks etc.

I could fit a full sized mattress in the width of our walkin and have at least 3’ to spare in length. The longer side has two levels for hanging and goes the whole length, while the other is just one level of hanging shelf for longer items and we use the other for pants and shirts since they aren’t as long when using hangers designed for such clothing items. There’s 3 small shelves on the narrowest wall at the back of the closet with a thing for hanging belts and accessories. I put the laundry sorter on the floor below the lower hanging level on the long wall since we didn’t need quite that much hanging area - I have a ton of clothing but not *that* much. I save the boxes that every pair of shoes comes in and store shoes in those, placed on the shelf part our hanging bars are attached to.

KM Swiss Coffee + BM Dove Wing are too close in Chroma to to appear crisp next to one another. Dove Wing is likely to look dingy by comparison. KM Swiss Coffee + Pale Oak have enough difference in Chroma to work with one another.

The easy answer is bifold doors instead of sliding doors. If for some reason you can't do that, you will have to move the shelves over. Are you building your own closet system or using something like Closet Maid? My husband (a retired engineer) just built ours from Closet Maid from Lowes and said the limit on rod length is what they include with the system. If you're putting your own together he said he thought you could use a five foot rod anchored in MDF on one side. He said you want to use screws that are as long as possible without breaking through to the other side and add an extra screw or two if you can on the bracket.

Here are some photos.

The second bedroom with smaller closets actually had three closets using up an entire wall, so I removed the doors from the middle one to use as a built-in bookshelf. It's currently a mess, though. Sorry!

The single closet is in the living room and its doors are broken, so they need replacing the most.

I put bifolds on a laundry closet that is 8 feet long, so a 7' closet opening should be able to handle bifolds or other alternative doors too. What were you thinking?

I really didn't have anything specific in mind other than something that is more functional and a little more... classy? Some of the other rooms have very old doors with antique hardware so these closet doors just don't fit in. And I very much dislike how the doors are always blocking some part of the closet.

My childhood home had bifold closet doors, but they were constantly coming of the tracks and just seemed flimsy overall. I'd like something substantial and traditional-looking if I go that route. What are yours like? I don't know if bifolds would look right in a living room... Maybe.

Aside from bifolds, do I have other options? I looked at the barn door style, but they wouldn't work at all.

Check out a decent door manufacturer's website, like Simpson. New bifold hardware will be better than the stuff we grew up with, promise. You can get traditional doors that look better with your old ones.

In total, these bifold doors span 8 feet (they are 2 feet each). Hope this helps to visualize.

Yes, these look very nice and would match my apartment much better! I wonder if I can find ones like these unfinished so I could stain them and keep the wood grain visible?

I'll check out some websites and see what I can come up with. But this gives me some hope. Thanks a lot!

I do have a problem with the one closet, as it shares a corner with the bedroom door, meaning if the closet was open you wouldn't be able to open the bedroom door all the way. So I'll have to figure that out...
