I have both growing now. My sweet peas are already blooming and MG are really close. Sweet peas are my birth flower (April) according to the farmers almanac, April 1st is the day to sow sweet peas. So I do. Some I start inside and when they are ready to plant out I put a few packs of seeds in with the seedlings. By this time it's hard to tell which ones were started inside and which ones were direct sown. I do the morning glories the same time and the same way. I have never tried to sow them this late but I suppose you could. The bunnies got to my MG's so I posted here as to what to do and Trudi said to start some new ones to enjoy later in the season when the bunnies aren't so hungry. I didn't but the ones that have survived are ready to bloom. With this warm weather they should germinate quickly. I'd say try it, if it works you know you can do them late, if it doesn't try sowing early spring. Once you plant morning glories you will never have to plant them again :) I have been spending the last month on morning glory patrol trying to keep them out of a "cottage" type bed I have. Every year the morning glories and the wild morning glories/bindweed? takes over that bed. I'm giving it one more year with diligent m/g patrol to see if I can get that bed to succeed without being choked to death. If not, that bed will need to be rethought. I do let them grow on my fences, in spots.

I planted moon flower seed about three weeks ago and some of them came up grew to about two inches high and turned brown and died before i got a chance to plant them in the ground. the other seeds did not grow at all. what did i do wrong i soaked them and nicked them kept them in the house in the little greenhouse you get from walmart and took the cover off when the leaves touched the top. Should I check the seeds that didn't grow for rot or should I just leave them alone. I think i need to start over with new seeds if i do should i do anything different? I started morning glorys at the same time and they seem to be small and only half of those came up. I live in zone six in CT i don't know if that makes any difference.

I've grown a wide variety of different MG's on vinyl wire fencing for over 4 decades and have never once encountered any climbing MG that had difficulty climbing the mesh(!) of a vinyl fencing... Fishing line is much thinner and about as smooth as vinyl covered wire,so if a MG can manage to climb up an extremely narrow straight piece of fishing line,it would stand to reason that the twisting vine could climb the mesh of a vinyl fence... I've found that the vinyl covered fencing does not get as hot as the non-vinyl covered bare wire and consequently will not burn the vines...I would use the analogy of using car seats with a vinyl covering and ones that were bare metal...which ones would burn you more... Everyone shares from their own experience...I've never seen a climbing MG not be able to climb the mesh of a vinyl covered fence...in fact I've trained non-climbing trailers up into vinyl covered mesh...
