Quote for new HVAC System, reasonable?

We are in the process of an extensive (down to the studs) remodel and small addition. In connection with the remodel, we are considering whether or not to add a mini-split to heat and cool the 500 sq ft addition vs. replacing the entire downstairs HVAC system, including new duct work. Our current downstairs HVAC system is an 11 year old Payne gas pack.

The bid our contractor is recommending is as follows for each option:

1. Mini-split -- Mitsubishi 20 SEER ductless heat pump with Honeywell programmable thermostat $6,445 installed and includes venting for 500 sq ft addition.

2. American Standard 14 SEER 2.5 ton gas pack with all new ductwork for 1700 sq ft living area and two thermostats (Honeywell programmable). $12,580.

These amounts (esp option 2) seem very high to me.

Any input as to whether the bids are reasonable and whether these are good alternatives would be greatly appreciated.
