Comments (42)SlimeyOkra, your weather sounds much like ours. It's been a VERY dry spring - only had 4/10 of rain so far - which has been very welcome given all the flooding we've had here for the past four years. Some of the farmers around us are finally reclaiming some of their land. :) We don't really grow greens most years, but have been eating asparagus and rhubarb for over a week now. I'm still putting out transplants, which isn't unusual for early June for us. Tomatoes and peppers and pole beans are the last to go out. I don't do much fussing to get early crops. Comments (33)Debbie Downer here ... my grandmother died, as grandmother do but she died on Thanksgiving. We had just returned from the hospital, which was hundreds of miles away, and were joined by my mother's sister and her family. Dinner has just showing up on the table and then, a phone call ... Mom could not celebrate Thanksgiving for several years afterwards. In time, she set about trying and I helped. I made the pies. So, I wasn't accomplished as a piecrust guy but I was a kid who could make pumpkin pie ッ. Approaching adulthood, somebody (probably Mom) told me that every man should at least be able to make an omelet. So, I added omelets to my culinary repertoire ... After I grew up, that book with the title, "real men don't eat quiche" came out and caused quite a stir. I didn't know what a quiche was but when I found out, it made me mad! It was going to be easy for a pumpkin pie omelet making guy like me, to make a quiche. So, I did! It took me quite awhile to realize that I don't care for nutmeg in them and I prefer a vegetable other than spinach. We use a lot of broccoli through the winter. (And, we'd have a lot of broccoli in the summer if'n Benjamin Bunny would stay outta my garden!!) Anyway, it's usually winter and usually broccoli but now I have bok choy in the winter!! Hey. Comments (24)My garden has been terrible this year, thanks for the record breaking heat. I've had a few tomatoes, mostly little egg shaped tomatoes that were labeled Jubilee, but don't look anything like them. Still, they've been quite tasty. My tomatoes, the few I've gotten, are all finished now, though. I've been growing spaghetti squash and Charentais melons at work. All I can say is that I have a lot to learn about growing melons. I only got 4, and they all split. I'm so disappointed. However, I have lots and lots and lots of spaghetti squash. The other day we went to farmers markets, which I wrote about in my birthday thread. That evening, I sauteed some red onions, (not from the markets), sweet peppers (don't know the variety, but shaped like banana peppers, but much better), yellow squash, some garlic, celery and tomatoes. To this mixture I added some whole wheat penne that I cooked on the side. at the end of cooking, I grated a little parm reg on top and added some chopped basil from my garden. They always say on the cooking shows that it's all about the ingredients. Well, they ain't lying. This simple little pasta meal was delicious, simply because it was made from good, home grown, fresh veggies. Oh, and the fact that I was out of olive oil and had to use butter! lol. Comments (21)Iceberg or romaine lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, peas, broccoli, carrots, beans, sometimes turkey or chicken, and ocassionally cheese or walnuts are some of the things I add. Top it off with low-fat or no-fat dressing. Had a big salad with dinner tonight with lots of the above stuff in it and low-fat Sweet and Sour Poppyseed dressing. Yum.......See More- 6 years ago
