Viking Electric Oven - Anyone Happy? (27" Oven needed)

Hi Everyone,
I am moving into a new house in a few weeks and one thing I'd like to do is a smallish kitchen remodel. One issue is there is currently a 27" GE combo wall oven installed. It looks like it's 11 or so years old.

I went to a store today to see some of what is out there. This store also carries some high end brands, such as Viking, Wolf, Miele, Thermador, Dacor.. They also had all of the standard stuff too. However, I was struck by the feel between the high end brands and the normal brands. The high end stuff feels so solid compared to the normal consumer brands.

After some research, it looks like the choices are somewhat limited in 27" widths. The Viking felt especially solid. The marketing on the Viking has my interested piqued, too. The Gormet-Glo broiler seems awesome (has anyone used it that can speak to it's effectiveness?). It seems like many people are many posts mentioning reliability issues with Viking. However, looking at the dates, they seem years old. Does anyone have any more up-to-date information about Viking, especially their ovens?

Other brands available in 27" (not exhaustive, I'm still trying to come up with a complete list), Viking, KitchenAid, GE/GE Profile, Monogram, Thermador, Whirlpool, Electrolux.
I'm honestly still in the research phase, so nothing is anywhere near final. Just curios if I should write off the Viking, even though it made a very good first impression.

I would write off Viking. Their current owners are embattled with the previous owners over the sale of the company and its condition at the point of sales. Reports of service recently have not been promising either. I have an older 27" oven from Miele. It is over 10yrs old and my cabinet can accommodate a 30" model. I am not sure I would buy a 27" as a replacement. If I were in your shoes, I would replace it with a 30".

I'm currently weighing my options. I really need to get a contractor in the house to see what's possible. I'm now considering tearing out the 27" wall oven, stealing just a tiny bit of cabinet space and getting a 30" range.

If you look up any unit on something like AJMadison or the manufacturer's website, you can find the interior dimensions. They are not entirely accurate - they overstate what actually would fit in there - but they give you an idea for comparison. The best way is to take a big pan, go to a store, and see how it fits in various models, as debs3 suggested. The real usable space in my Elux non-icon wall oven is about 22w x14.5d x12h, but the actual dimensions are larger than that.

Yep, it is not the induction. I wanted induction, but my budget won't support it at the moment. Had it been induction, both would have been mine, budget be damned ;-). deb52899, keep in touch with the dealer, and other dealers in your area. I got a quote for the same unit I bought from a local dealer and they quoted $6400 with tax, delivery and installation for a "retail" version. Mine was identical, just overstock. They probably would have picked up the new in box overstock and kept the extra $3k. Look for showroom models, OTC and other options. You can save a lot going that direction. I just returned from the distributor and picked up a range hood that was in the OTC area. I picked up a VWH3048SS with a VINV600 blower installed. Retail was about $1600 for the pair, $350 was my price. If you can work with separate cooktop and ovens, they had several induction cooktops there. Not big discounts on them though.. Then there is the Gaggenau with side opening door. I don't quite understand your layout. I don't know if the side opening door helps or hinders. They sell right hinge and left hinge doors. This is a top shelf oven. In my last house I had an old gas double oven and a separate gas cooktop. I am a baker first and a cook 2nd. I always had beautiful cakes, cookies, breads etc. When we redid the kitchen I was disappointed not to have the gas double oven option (we were not looking at high end items -- I got GE profile electric double ovens and gas cooktop) At no point during that remodel did I think (or be told) that you can't bake cookies, cakes etc well in gas ovens. Now with this remodel all I am hearing is the difference in baking with gas is sub par if you want to do cakes cookies etc. and it is making me 2nd guess myself even though until the last couple of years I have always had a gas oven. The good news is is that I think the Wolf DF is really ugly and I really like the looks of the 48" AG -- plus it is cheaper -- and I know I can cook well in it -- only thing that is really holding me up is the no self clean -- I am just not an oven cleaner :-(
