27- vs. 30-inch wall oven
Comments (22)My last home had a fantasticly massive 1950s-vintage 48" stove, with a unheated compartment off to the left of what must have been about a 33"w main oven compartment. This dominated the tiny kitchen it was in. From there I moved to another small apartment, this one with a cheapo 20" range, which makes me long for the 24" wall oven I had 3 apartments ago. I find 27" plenty wide for everything; I'd consider 30" more for the extra options available only in that size (i.e. Electrolux Icon single or double, and GE Advantium 240 wall ovens) that don't have a 27" equivalent. OTOH, some ovens, like the Gaggenau side-hinged ovens are available in 70cm (just over 27"w) but not 30"....See MoreHelp with Wall Ovens 27 in vs 30 in
Comments (3)Cheryl, Thank you for your input, the 27 in Electrolux wave touch is now a contender. We'd like to also get a steam oven (you may have noticed from my other posts). And I am torn about what brand. We really liked how much more steam the thermador steam convection oven has over the miele. For wall ovens, I want a rotisserie and gliding racks, and the elctrolux doesn't have the rotisserie. The miele has both, but we'd love knobs instead of a touch panel. And the 30 in thermador has both, but we need a 27 inch oven and know nothing about how good the thermador cooks (I wasn't even considering that brand since the last time I did research into all of this was 7 years ago and A LOT has changed since then)....See More27' or 30' wall oven quandary
Comments (22)How old are your appliances? Are parts still available to repair them? We weren't so lucky when our old oven died. Our wonderful repair guy tried to find the part to repair it but he said it wasn't made anymore and he couldn't find it for sale on EBay or Craigslist (I tried as well). However, I don't regret waiting 2 years after my oven died to get a 30" oven when we remodeled. We got by with the cook top, toaster oven (very nice Breville model, $250), turkey roaster and crockpot all year, and the grill during nice weather. DH and I plan to stay in our home until we can't manage the stairs anymore (hopefully a long time from now) so it was worth it to us to deal with short-term inconvenience until we could get what we wanted. How long do you plan to stay in your home? IMO, this is another factor in what you choose to do. If your appliances are too old to be repaired when they die and you have your heart set on a 30" wall oven, check Craigslist and EBay to see if you can find a decent used 27" oven to tide you over until you can afford to remodel and get a 30" oven. I advise against a MW/oven combo, as do most GWers. If one appliance dies, you have to replace the whole unit, not just the the oven or MW. Combos are cheaper initially but they could prove more costly in the long run. btw, a built-in MW oven will always have the bigger-on-the-outside-but-smaller-on-the-inside look. It's not meant to take the place of a double oven (2 full size, regular ovens). It's a MW with an additional cook function. Comments (7)We had a combo unit, and one did experience an early demise. We were a little annoyed with the extra expense of buying another combo unit however what we discovered is that would have been a deal compared to what actually happened. Nothing on the market at that time would fit the cabinet we had, so we needed to replace that tall cabinet. Matching existing cabinetry is difficult, and we were getting no help there. In the end, the dead appliance morphed into a complete kitchen remodel. This time, we're doing our ovens as separate units, and we're making sure that the oven stack is made with separate components, so that they could be unassembled and remade in another size. What we had before was one tall cabinet, floor to ceiling, that was impossible to alter without destroying it because of the way it was constructed....See Moredavidro1
