Rose for a a carriage house

Ignore the Awakening growing on the fence in the front of this pic, what are our thoughts on growing a rose on the carriage house in back?

The barn/carriage house will be repainted this year, I'd like to grow a rose up onto the flat part of the roof.

Do you have color preferences; are you hoping for fragrance, care about thorniness, etc.?

I would guess that your conditions would be ideal for a Prairie Rose type such as 'Baltimore Belle', but they are pretty much once-bloomers; are you hoping for good repeat?

Well. I'm fine with a once bloomer. But I do think a strong fragrance is a must, other than that disease resistance as it will be too large to do much with after a few years.

Would prefer fewer thorns, but as you see I grow awakening - so... I mean. I deal with them.

I have a repeat blooming Everblooming Cl Cécile Brünner - which I love, on the other side of the house. Maybe something like that?

Otherwise, I'm inclined to go with "the garland."

It might depend on what part of the country your property is & what hardware was easily available to builders. A lot of cast iron foundries were in the South & it's reflected in a lot of local hardware from that era. My 1858 house has iron box locks made by Carpenter (the latch goes up & down instead of in & out) that were imported from England until about 1865. I've never seen them with anything other than knobs, mostly cast brass, but there's no reason a lever wouldn't have worked. I have no original knobs so I don't know if mine were brass or the white porcelain variety. My keyhole covers for the exterior doors & the front parlor are teardrop shaped, white porcelain over a brass escutcheon so either knob would have matched; escutcheons for the less important rooms are rectangular cast iron. The hall doors to the 2 formal rooms are the only ones that had mortised locks originally so I assume they were a status symbol (I seem to recall researching this & mortise locks had just come into vogue around that time). The outside kitchen had been demolished in 1934 & the stable replaced twice so I don't know what kind of hardware they had. My hardware is very utilitarian as befitting a carpenter's Greek Revival home, but I've seen the same pieces on much finer houses, although the Italianate mansions of the era are probably more ornate. Hard to tell what's original when you're on a tour.

The size you quoted is not a standard size door. You'll have to talk to a custom garage door company should be able to help you design your carriage house look door. Thinking about what everyone has said and how people use a kitchen when on vacation. The house is halfway between 2 small but cool little mountain towns. Great restaurants and shopping, so I think anyone renting would probably go out for dinner at least once or twice. So probably will use this kitchen for breakfasts. I made the kitchen back into a U. If I could, I would make that window a door and add a small deck to have a grill. I like the idea if the dining table being a sofa table with the option of pulling it out to seat more if needed. This also gives me the option of adding a bar overhang on the peninsula. It is only 12" deep, which isn't ideal but it should suffice.

I appreciate different all the different perspectives! If you read the ideas/Options in kicking around, I wasn’t asking about the lighting or furniture. We actually have too much lighting hidden in those beams and never put all of them on or all the way up (all on dimmers). When I said “dark” I meant that the overall design currently is various brown and dark tones. Looking to add more layers of design. I am nervous about painting original items like the bookshelves and mantle however I think that could change the old cigar lounge vibe a bit to a more modern twist. I’m willing to change the walls, woodwork, rug, bookshelf decor, pillows etc. I feel like the “base” is currently set and ready for finishing touches.

How about Darlow's Enigma? I spent the first 2 years shaping it & now let it run rampant. It's white, fragrant & repeat blooming & disease-resistant for me.

I like the idea of 'The Garland', and we know 'Climbing Cecile B' will cover anything she's asked to. Is 'The Garland' heat-tolerant enough for your East Coast summers?

A Prairie rose that is said to be very fragrant is the found rose "Arcata Pink Globe". It does have some repeat, apparently, but it is a vision of loveliness in those photos.

Another Hybrid setigera you might like is 'Erinnerung an Brod'. It is a once-bloomer, but I personally think it would be well worth the wait. I bought one as a gift, and was tempted to take cuttings first, the foliage was so nice, (I didn't). I do plan to get a few cuttings when I next visit the people I gave it to- they live in Raleigh and it is flourishing there. All the other roses are mid-pink, but I think this would complement your 'Awakening' and 'Climbing Cecile', while changing the color scheme a bit. It might not get tall enough for your purposes, however... maybe you need two roses?

Hopefully, someone closer to you will now chime in with suggestions.

Yes two roses. :) I need more.

Also, I am a tad concerned that as it makes it onto the roof of the building it will be scorched by the hot sun.
