Ha ha - that's me. Once I unleash my tale of woe of agreeing to move from San Diego to North Carolina and having a house that's an unintended fixer upper and trying to make it work and no one likes anything the way I do and why am I even here, believe me - the tears will start flowing.

If I have an ANSI sticker on my sink and vanity, where would it be found? Would it be on the faucet assembly or the sink, since the vanity itself is just a wooden box?

Also remember that plumbers do not like to install items bought elsewhere by the homeowner, especially if they are a little different than what they get from local suppliers. Plumbers take less time and make more money by doing nearly every installation the same way every time. That is why they like to use hardware and parts that they are familiar with.

In NC I assume Ikea would be in the non-standard category for most plumbers.

Can't speak to your GSO inspectors, and every NC municipality has the right to tweak their codes, but we just finished a big bath reno here in the Triangle, and our custom cabs had no stickers. The inspector never questioned anything about them, and our town is notorious amongst contractors for employing over the top inspectors. I cannot imagine what there might be about an IKEA cab that would cause it to fail?

Ugh... so all the existing ANSI stickers in your house didn't protect it from prematurely turning into a fixer-upper? Darn.

How about printing your own stickers? They should work at least as well as the ones that assured passing inspection for the previous owners.

Why not just scoot over to the Charlotte store and ask them about it---surely many people must be dealing with this?

I've got an email in to IKEA for any documentation I can wave around if need be. Charlotte is 90 miles away. Not that I don't go to IKEA seemingly all the time between this and the now finished kitchen remodel (I have an unholy love for IKEA). It's the sink that's supposed to bear the mark. Plumber is pleasantly cheerful about all my "weird" stuff and wasn't put off by how it works.

I've remodeled both my bathrooms here in Minneapolis. They have a fee and permit for everything. Nobody ever asked about ANSI anything.

I suspect the plumber may be raising the ANSI issue just as a way of deflecting. I.e., he probably isn't familiar with (and therefore reluctant to use) IKEA's proprietary vanity drain system. Like the world's largest furniture and housewares manufacturer/retailer wouldn't know how to put out a perfectly code-compliant drain system with its vanity cabinets!

It's a frankly brilliant system by the way; it eliminates the conventional vertical tailpiece under the drain, which in turn eliminates the need for drawer cutouts to clear the plumbing. Plus it's assembled with o-ringed slip joints which makes it a snap to install. But because it looks weird and alien to an "old-school" plumber, he'll grumble that it will leak. Or invoke ANSI.

I'm glad to hear your positive comments about the IKEA sink! Plumber is perfectly cheerful about installing it and seemed to get how it worked right away but had some other sink fail inspection at another house for lack of ANSI sticker so he has started looking ahead for them. We'll see what happens.

I am not by any means an expert, but in NYC (which is code happy) I believe the sink will pass, not the drain trap. I have seen plenty of Ikea sinks installed, all of them used a standard drain trap not the one Ikea sells with the sink. Good luck.

hmorton- Hope u r still reading this thread. I want to buy the Ikea godmorgon/odensvik but am concerned about the codes here in NYC. Have contacted Ikea several times & read just about every board, youtube video, etc for answers, without success. If the drain trap is a problem, as u have noted, is there a substitute that can be used, which I assume would need to be steel or brass? Can the Rinnen plumbing parts be replaced with steel or something that meets NYC code? thx for any feedback!

rmlny- I don't know anything about specific brand so am unable to comment on the use of RInnen plumbing parts. Others here might know. If you need further info I suggest starting a new thread so it gets the attention of everyone.

As I understand it, in NYC you are required by code to have a licensed plumber do the plumbing work. If you are moving the location of the sink more than 2 feet you need a permit. Ikea sinks are installed using a common p-trap. No PVC allowed anywhere in NYC. You can go to any hardware store and see the p traps. I have learned from experience, do not buy cheap plumbing parts and the best place to buy is the plumbing supply places. They will be able to guide you to the correct products. You can buy at the big box stores, but the help you get is unreliable and if you are diying this, get good advice. This kind of trap interferes with at least the top drawer, so most people have a carpenter modify the drawer so they can still use it. It also matters where the drain pipe is located on the wall, too low and none of the drawers will work without modification. I know that many people have the skill set to do this themselves, however if you live in a multi-unit building and break a pipe you have more than you to consider in the ensuing flood, not to mention trying to explain to the coop or condo board why you are not following the by-laws or codes.

people cut their pipe where it extends from the wall & attach an elbow or adaptor which allows the trap to run parallel to the wall keeping all pipes within the 4" space behind the drawer, avoiding the need to cut the drawers. I've already been to HD to look at comparable steel parts. I won't be doing the installation but I want to make sure that any modifications & parts needed will not turn this reasonably priced vanity into a very costly &/or insurmountable installation.

Sorry I don't have more insight into the issue. I don't have to pay for a plumber as I have a plumber in the family. But cost add up and installation can be expensive. If there is an issue and it takes time the cost are high. But that doesn't take away from the savings on the product. I wonder if expensive designer drawer sinks have the same installation issues?

Im thinking of doing a wall hung sink/vanity and toilet my very small master bathroom for space reasons. I am not using IKEA for resale reasons. I may have a custom sink vanity made with a soapstone top and under mount sink. I'm only in planning stages. Good luck.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with IKEA sinks. They meet all plumbing code. If it helps your obstinate plumber, just tell him to think of it as an ADA installation where someone would need to have clear access under the sink for a wheelchair. If your plumber insists the sink is not to code, you should probably consider a different plumber. Who knows what else he may be lying to you about?

Ikea double vanity. asking for Ansi, ipc or upc or third party. used same vanity in same town in 3 other properties and now i ran into a problem with plumbing inspection.

Have you reached out to the Ikea store you purchased the vanities from?

What is the problem? Their double sinks in the 48” cabinet do not meet American plumbing codes that require 30” between sinks. Otherwise they are fine.

Inspector is requeating certification from icc or ansi approval or third party. the double vanities are 58” cabinet.

Unless the sink drains are 30” apart they don’t meet code. I’ve never had an inspector look for those Certs so they are new or someone annoyed them on the job site!

@HALLETT & Co. When I remodeled I wanted a Havens copper sink and was told by my designer that a kitchen sink in a multi-family condo needed to have a UL Certification. I found this mind boggling because 1) what possible electrical issues could a kitchen sink have 🤣🤣 and 2) the quality of my super expensive Havens copper sink was better than the cheap sinks that did have the certification.

The plumbing inspector who did my inspections was a stickler for many many things - I think I was inspected four times but he never checked to see if there was a UL label on the kitchen sink. 🤷🏼‍♀️ My GC and designer said they could probably find a sticker from one of the sinks they were using on other projects if worse came to worse🤫
