Need help sizing new hvac for old house

I have a 1450sf Craftsman bungalow built in 1912. The existing gas furnace dates to the 1960s but the previous owner installed the mylar ducting within the last few years. I've had 6 estimates to replace the furnace and add A/C, and all have recommended 3.5-4 ton furnace, condenser, coil from Lennox, Goodman and Rheem. This seems oversized for the square footage and LA climate, especially since we plan to insulate the attic after installation and have blinds or drapes over all the (admittedly drafty) windows. We get a lot of morning light on the east side, but the rest of the windows are shaded by the roof overhang and porch. Our lot doesn't get much shade at all. Not a single contractor has performed a Manual J load calculation, and all but one have many stellar reviews on a variety of sites. Are they just trying to get a bigger sale, or do we really need the larger system?
