Growing (sub-)tropical plants outside in zone 7 similar to bananas

Hello, I've been growing bananas (basjoo and sikkimensis so far) outdoors in zone 7 all year. During winter they are protected accordingly against freezing temperatures - in spring there's new growth again. So i was wondering if any other (sub-)tropical plants like (Mountain-)Papaya, Mango, etc. can be overwintered outside similar to the banana plants with lots of non-heated protection(or like semi-hardy bananas with the pseudostems inside in a cool place). Has anyone tried something similar before?
