Ticks and Redbugs
Comments (21)went to a rose open house at a friend's recently that happens to have tons of ticks around. anyhow, pulled a lonestar tick off my hip the next morn (i did look night before- must have missed him). at any rate, i put him in a glass of soapy water thinking he'd drown quickly. that bugger kept walking up the sides of the glass, finally settling down on the bottom, but still crawling around after an hr or so. came back more than a day later, he looks dead, so i dumped him out on the side of my sink, intending to put him in a baggie, should i develop something. never did get around to it, & came back a couple hrs later to find him crawling around on my sink- live, after probably 36 hrs in soapy water! i'd swirled him good several times- there was no way he was haboring a bubble to breath. those things are true survivalists!! looking around at what i had close, i dripped a bit of vinegar on him & he kept going, so i dripped a drop of my contact cleaner on him- which killed him instantly. makes me scared about what it could do to my eyes! i just thought it was scary to know how hard they are to kill. i guess the best thing to do if you wanted to keep ahold of one in case of disease would be to put it in something sealed staright off so it couldn't escape. the ones that haven't bitten i normally flush. i've heard alchohol will mess up any tests they need to run on it, which is why i didn't use it. i never developed symptoms, so he got tossed today. i don't suppose contact cleaner was too good for test results, either, but he did die. :) tammy...See MoreWhat do you do about ticks?
Comments (10)Just sitting here at my computer and found a dog tick walking around on my neck. Then I remembered I had stopped to talk to my neighbor while she walked her 2 greyhounds and of course I petted them and they're 'leaners,' but that's not what I wanted to say. I'm 2/3 through with a course of antibiotics because of a tick bite I got. As I mentioned above, I do landscape gardening. I know I got the tick bite on another property, this time in Stone Ridge, also the property of weekenders who have two large dogs who crap everywhere on the property. Another crew member had taken off 2 ticks, one dog, one small. I'm totally certain the tick was only on my leg for a few hours. I noticed it because I felt a burning sensation and noticed a half dollar size red spot which was slightly raised and quite painful. When I put my glasses on and looked at it, I noticed the tiny black spot at one side of the red area. As soon as I removed the tick (embedded, so I had to use a sterilized needle) the swelling began to reduce. I honestly can't be certain it was a deer tick since I removed it in pieces but it was the same size as a deer tick. The next day, I visited my Dr's office and started the antibiotic. Everything I read says an embedded tick needs 24-48 hrs to transmit the Lyme Disease. Since I've had maybe 7 deer tick bites (my usual response is an intensely itchy mosquito size bite) and this bite was totally different, I chose to follow the cautious route and take the antibiotic. Since then, I've heard of several people who got PAINFUL tick bites. Has anyone else had this response to a tick bite? I've heard rumors of another kind of tick moving in to our area and wonder about this. Incidentally, Jayco, the deer mouse is much more important to deer ticks than deer are. White tail deer are one of the hosts but the don't spread Lyme Disease. On the other hand, DEER MICE carry Lyme Disease and will transmit it to humans through deer ticks....See MoreBest deep woods mosquite repellant for kids to be used regularly?
Comments (11)Our property is in the woods too. Even where we are now, my boys spend a lot of time in the woods. In the summer, I check every night for ticks. Deer ticks transmit Lyme disease as you know Threeapples. The babies are the size of a poppyseed and the adults are the size of an Appleseed. As long as you get them off quickly, the chances of getting Lyme disease are slim. thank heaven you got your dd treated early. With the warm winter we had in the Midwest (my school district in il didn't use one snow day) there will be more deer ticks this yr, so we will have to be even more vigilant. If you have girls, pull their hair up when they play out--check the scalp each night, the ears, and other folds. My boys are shy, but I check them anyway, even the groin. I use mosquito repellant if my boys are going to be in the woods or playing outside after dusk (with DEET). Just make them shower well each night--which goes without saying with my kids! Then, of course other concerns that makes mosquito repellant important are West Nile Virus and Encephalitis....See MoreTick attack.
Comments (2)Giacomo, I'm located about the centre of Newcastle - 2 or 3 kilometers from actual sea. There is a nature reserve within a kilometer, and I suppose there would be plenty of tick hosts in there - bandicoots etc. I haven't seen any unusual wild life in my area, though. Over the years there have been possums around, but never ticks before. Got any ideas on how to discourage them?...See Morechristine 5b
