Help! What is wrong with my roses? Leaves look weird & dying :(

Does anyone know what is wrong with my roses? The leaves have been looking a little weird the last few years and this is the first year that I had about 5 roses die! Ugh! I am not sure what is wrong with them and can't seem to find anything online. The leaves look just really thin and not like they normally do. These are roses that have been alive 13+ years at my home. I usually prune them early every Spring, but haven't yet because I'm just not sure what is going on. If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.

It is a virus called rose rosette. Since you have had them for so long I'm assuming that no herbicides have been used nearby. This would include products used to eliminate weeks in the yard. Doubt there is any hope at this point and best to dig them out and destroy them.

How much water is it receiving? Looks healthy fo me. Look on underside of yellowing leaves for any black dots, which could indicate the start of a fungal disease called black spot. You can remove those leaves & any fallen leaves below the rose. to prevent the spores from reinfecting the plant. Also apply mulch around your roses. This helps prevent fungal spores found naturally in the soil from splashing upward when it rains or you water. The mulch also acts as a weed block and decreases watering requirements by keeping the soil below moist. Use about a 3” layer. Don’t pile the mulch against the canes either.

Your ph is a little high and the roses may be re-acting to it as this can cause what looks like to me as a mild manganese deficiency starting. If it is, the leaves will go to a brighter yellow. I would give the roses a rest from any spray or fertilizer. Just water and see if the new leaves are normal looking. If they do go yellow then there is a foliar spray for mineral deficiencies. Don't give up on the roses as there is always some thing you can do to solve most basic rose problems.

Kara, I think you're probably right about the neem oil. I forgot that OP had used it. I think Adeniums in general do react badly to neem (or other oils). I did try neem years ago on an Adenium and the leaves yellowed ad fell off. I forgot all about that as well, senior moment I guess, lol. I don't remember the leaves having those spots, but this was a long time ago. That plant ultimately survived the neem, but kicked the bucket when the heat went off the greenhouse one winter night. Edit to add... I do think that Adeniums are a challenge to grow well in cold winter areas. We just don't get as long a growing season as they like, and it's hard to give them enough heat and light to prolong the growing season.

Hard to see in the picture. A brighter photo would help. It sort of looks like it could be sunburn or something which burned the leaf. From you photo, it doesn't appear diseased. Jane

Thank you everyone. I am so bummed. I have 7 roses that I cut back tonight that have it and my husband is going to rip them out of the ground tomorrow. I only have 3 roses near them that don't have it. And, 2 others further away that are safe. What a bummer. I noticed it a couple of summers ago, but I'm a busy mom of 2 and just wasn't sure what it was and just thought it was new leaf growth. If I had known, I could have probably ripped out the ones that first came down with it and saved most of my roses. Does anyone know how long I need to wait before I can plant new roses? Would it be best to wait until next Spring? The people that lived in this house before me planted these roses all so close together, so I think when I do plant new ones I am going to do less and space them out more. Thanks so much for all your help everyone! I just assumed I could spray them and they'd be ok. :(

Really can't say that I know for sure. It seems that most people like to wait until the following spring. I do know that rrd/rrv does not survive in your soil but will survive for a while in the roots. So try to dig out as many as possible especially if replanting this year. My guess would be that since you had them for long they could have extensive root systems. Maybe it would be easier to dig some out and paint round up on the cut of the rest. Then wait until spring to replant.

I'm very sorry about your roses it is sad to lose them.

Thanks. It is good to know that they can survive even in the roots. It is sad. :( I wish I had looked into it sooner, but now I'll know in the future to keep an eye on this disease and to act quicker if one of my rose bushes gets it. SIGH.
