200sq feet of mystery garden - pictures, please help!

Hi everyone,

i recently moved into my first home in the fall. Now that it's spring everything is blooming and I have a patch that looks like it's supposed to be a garden of some sort, about 10ft by 20 ft, filled with very unruly very large plants. I live in New England (zone 6), I can't tell if these are weeds that the previous owner left or perennials gone wild. Can you tell me what they are and how to get rid of them (I.e. Is it enough to rip thyem up or do I need to dig up bulbs?)

There appear to be perhaps three different plants. Two smaller varieties and one rather large. I know the largest plant has some sort of bulb as I dug part of one up, not sure about the hundreds of little ones though. I'd like to remove all this and put in roses as it is one of the few sunny areas of my garden.

pic 1 includes a further away view of the garden for proportions. Pic 2 is a thinner, yet tall plant with long stringy leaves. pic 3 is similar to pic 2 but the leaves appear rounder.

Please help!
